Fordham Downs URI In Front of Record Crowd

Rams Move to 11-1 on the Year at Home

The Fordham Rams won their 11th home game in 12 tries this season on Wednesday afternoon in the Rose Hill Gym, besting Rhode Island 64-51 in front of record crowd on Field Trip Day.
 
The attendance of 2,686, consisting primarily of local school children, was the largest in Fordham Women's Basketball history.
 
Abigail Corning led the way for the Rams on the afternoon, netting 17 points on 6-12 shooting, including a 3-7 effort from beyond the arc.
 
Erin Rooney had another spectacular effort for the Rams, scoring 14 points and dishing out eight assists against the Rams of Rhode Island.  In her last five games, Rooney has registered no fewer than eight assists in any one outing, averaging 16 points and 9.2 helpers per contest.
 
Freshman Hannah Missry tallied her fourth straight game in double figures, scoring 11 points on 3-6 shooting from three.  The Jackson, N.J., native also tied a season high with six rebounds.
 
Samantha Clark narrowly missed double figures for Fordham, finishing the game with nine points and seven rebounds.
 
Fordham dominated from the start, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. 
 
By the 11:30 mark of the half, Fordham had extended its lead to 12, 19-7, on a Rooney three-pointer.  Corning netted seven points during that stretch.
 
The Rams had built their lead to 13 at the eight minute media timeout, grabbing a 23-10 advantage with 7:46 left on the clock.  At that point, the Rams were shooting 57 percent from the floor and over 40 percent from three.
 
The Fordham offense continued to click over the remainder of the half, building the lead to as many as 16, 28-12, before entering the locker room with a 31-19 advantage.
 
At the break, Corning led the Rams with 12 points on 4-5 shooting.  The senior also dished out four assists.  Missry chipped in five points, while Rooney added five points and four assists.
 
URI came out hot to start the second half, narrowing the deficit to eight, 31-23, on a Kerry Wallack jumper just under two minutes into the period.
 
Ahead by nine less than a minute later, Fordham quickly uncorked an 8-0 run, moving ahead by 17, 42-25, at the 16 minute mark of the half.
 
Rhode Island would pull within 14 on a few occasions in the ensuing minutes, but the contest was never in doubt down the stretch.
 
Fordham extended its lead to as high as 22 in the closing minutes before the starters went to the bench and URI narrowed the gap to 13, the lead with which Fordham would end the game.
 
The Rams hit the road following their pair of home wins, taking on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon.
