VCU Game Notes
Coming of three wins in their first four Atlantic 10 contests, the Rams travel to Richmond for what could be their toughest test to date in conference, taking on a loaded VCU squad on Wednesday night at 7 PM.
SERIES HISTORY: Fordham and VCU have endured a fairly short series history, with last year's Battle of the Rams marking the first meeting between the two schools. Â In that contest, the Rams of Rose Hill jumped out to a 30-6 lead, eventually downing Rams from Richmond 71-41 in the Rose Hill Gym.
SCOUTING VCU: Â After finishing last season with an 11-19 mark, the Rams have completely turned it around in 2013-14. Â VCU enters Wednesday's matchup with a 15-2 mark, the highest win total in the A-10, coming off a recent win over a Saint Joe's squad that was picked to finish second in the conference before the season.
Using a brand of basketball they have dubbed "Fury," the Rams employ a similar style to their nationally acclaimed men's squad, relentlessly pushing the ball up the floor at breakneck pace. Â Averaging 80.8 points per game (second in the A-10), VCU will run into a Fordham defense that has limited its opponents to just 56.3 points per game this season (tops in the A-10).
Leading the way in the program's turnaround is senior forward Robyn Parks. Â The Waldorf, Md., native has been playing off the charts this season, topping the A-10 in scoring with 22.5 points per contest and checking in at second in the conference with 9.7 rebounds per game. Â With most of her shots coming from a high-percentage distance, Parks is shooting an astounding 52 percent from the floor this season.
Parks leads four Rams in double figure scoring on the season, followed by a pair of standout freshmen in Isis Thorpe and Keira Robinson. Â The two average 13.1 and 11.8 points per game, respectively. Â Averaging 10.4 points per game in her sophomore campaign is Jessica Pellechio, whose older sister, Samantha, was an All-Atlantic 10 standout on the softball diamond for Fordham from 2008-2011. Â
Freshman Monnazjea Finney-Smith also posseses an interesting family tree.  Her older brother, Dorian Finney-Smith, is a sophomore at the University of Florida, where he averages 11 points and eight assists a game  for the seventh ranked Gators.Â
