Richmond Game Notes
After dropping a decision for the first time in nearly two months, the Rams will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Richmond Spiders at 2 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
The matchup will be one of two played in Division I's oldest gym on Saturday, as the men's team also hosts Richmond at 7 PM. Both games are being held in conjunction with the induction of the 2014 class to the Fordham Athletic Hall of Fame.
SERIES HISTORY: Dating back to 1988 but having been primarily played since Richmond joined the Atlantic 10 in 2002, the series history between the Rams and Spiders has been overwhelmingly one sided in favor of Richmond. The Spiders are 11-2 all-time against the Rams, but Fordham has momentum in their favor, having downed the Spiders last year in the Rose Hill Gym.
In hindsight, the first game in 1988 between Fordham and Richmond has some interesting historical context. That year, a young Richmond coach led the Spiders to their first ever postseason appearance and a 24-9 record. That coach's name?
Stephanie Gaitley.
SCOUTING RICHMOND: After finishing a game below .500 in non-conference play, the Spiders have struggled somewhat at the beginning of A-10 play, dropping two out of their first three league contests. Richmond kicked off the conference season with a loss at home to Saint Joe's before downing URI a few days later. Most recently, the Spiders dropped a road decision at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
Redshirt junior forward Gevenieve Okoro has been leading the way for the Spiders in 2013-14, topping the squad in both points and rebounds. The Gibbsboro, N.J., native averages 12.1 points and eight rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 45 percent from the floor.
Two other Spiders are scoring in double figures on the season, as Olivia Healy averages 11.5 per outing and Kristina King chips in 10.2
