Women's Tennis Defeats Rhode Island, 5-2

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis team wrapped up a busy weekend with a 5-2 win over the University of Rhode Island on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts today.

The Rams opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking all three doubles matches. Sarah Ali and Amy Simidian defeated Kathleen Uy and Galina Chernykh at first doubles, 8-3, while Bella Genkina and Anika Novacek teamed up to take second doubles from Nithila Asokaraj and Elizaveta Sadovnikov, 8-3, and Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong were victorious at the third position over Karolina Wojciak and Amanda Junkins, 8-2

In singles play, Genkina picked up the first win for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at fourth singles over Wojciak and then Ali gave Fordham a 3-0 lead when she upended Uy at the second position, 6-1, 6-1.

Novacek clinched the win for the Rams with a straight set win over Lauren Benoit at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-2, before Leong added another point for Fordham with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sadovnikov at fifth singles.

The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, April 10, as they travel to West Point, N.Y., to face Army at 3:00 PM.
