The Fordham baseball team continued its series with a doubleheader at Georgia State on Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta. Georgia State got on the board in the first with a pair of runs, highlighted by an RBI-single by Scott Sarratt and an RBI-ground out from Caden Bailey.
Fordham cut the Panthers' lead in half in the third, as Joseph DeVito led off the inning with a double to right, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joseph Runco.
The Panthers came back with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to expand the lead to 6-1. In the fourth, the Panthers picked up runs on an error and a wild pitch, while in the fifth, Georgia State scored on another wild pitch and a fielder's choice.
Fordham tried to get back in the game with two runs in the sixth, which made it 6-3. With two outs and a runner on first, David Judisky connected for a double to right, scoring Ryan McNally from first. Ian Edmiston followed with an RBI-single to right center to score Judisky.
The Panthers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then capped the scoring with a solo home run by Wilson, finishing off a 9-3 win.
Fordham starter Chris Pike (1-5) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings pitched, while Cody Johnson (2 H, 2 R) and J.C. Porter (2 H, 1 R) each pitched 1.1 innings of relief. Jonathan Reich wrapped up the pitching with a scoreless inning of relief.
At the plate, Judisky was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while DeVito was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
In game two, a late three-run rally by Georgia State in the sixth inning, gave the Panthers a 5-3 win in seven innings.
The Panthers once again scored first, picking up a two-run single by Matt Rose in the bottom of the second inning.
Fordham responded immediately with two runs in the third to tie the game. With two outs, Runco singled to center and moved to second on Charles Galiano's hit by pitch. Mike Mauri followed with an RBI-single to score Runco. Fordham then executed a first and third rundown successfully, which allowed Galiano to score from third.
The Rams then grabbed their first lead of the day in the top of the fourth inning, when Dan Sorine connected on his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right.
Fordham held the lead until the bottom of the sixth, where the Panthers scored three times off Fordham reliever Tim Swatek. Georgia State received three straight RBI-singles from Shane Gordon, Chad Prain, and Drew Shields to grab a 5-3 edge.
Fordham threatened in the top half of the seventh, as Edmiston led off with a double down the left field line, but Georgia State reliever Ben Burns struck out the next three hitters to record his first save of the season.
Swatek (1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on five hits. Fordham starter Jimmy Murphy pitched well in his first career start, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings of work. At the plate, Fordham mustered only five hits off Georgia State starter Aidan McLaughlin with Swatek, Runco, Mauri, Sorine, and Edmiston each having a hit.
