Atlanta, Ga. -
If Friday's series opener was any indication of a theme for the weekend, the pitching staff for both the Fordham Rams and Georgia State Panthers may want to call in sick for the remainder of the weekend. The two squads totaled 21 runs and 29 hits in the series opener with Georgia State outlasting Fordham, 12-9, at the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 11-16 overall, while Georgia State improved to 17-13.
After Georgia State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Fordham exploded for five runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Mike Mauri started the rally with a single to center, and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Dan Sorine then ripped a double to right, scoring Mauri. After an error and a sacrifice put runners at second and third, Ian Edmiston drew a walk to load the bases. Joseph DeVito then plated Sorine with a single with Ryan McNally also scoring on an error by the shortstop, giving Fordham a 3-2 lead. Charles Galiano then capped the inning with a two-run single to put the lead at 5-2.
The Panthers quickly knotted the game at five in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on an RBI-single by Nic Wilson and two ground outs.
The Rams regained the lead in the fourth, when Ian Edmiston hit a solo home run to left, the first of his career.
Fordham extended the lead to 8-5 in the fifth, as Sorine led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to McNally. After a strikeout, Edmiston connected for a two-run double to left, scoring both runners.
The Panthers then struck for the big inning in the bottom of the fifth. Fordham had escaped two rallies in the third and fourth inning with no damage, but this time Georgia State scored seven times to take a 12-8 lead. The inning was highlighted by two-run singles by both Scott Sarratt and Chris Triplett.
Fordham closed the gap to 12-9 in the seventh, as McNally registered a leadoff double, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on an Edmiston ground out. The Rams would get baserunners on in the final two innings but were unable to score, giving Georgia State the three-run victory.
For Fordham, starter Joseph Charest (1-5) did not get much help over his 4.2 innings of work, as the Rams committed three errors, leading to six unearned runs. In total, Charest allowed 12 runs (6 earned) on 14 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Brett Kennedy pitched a third of an inning, allowing one hit, while Rich Anastasi tossed three scoreless innings of three-hit relief, posting five strikeouts.
At the plate, Edmiston was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBI, while Sorine was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Joseph Runco and DeVito were both 2-for-4 with Galiano posting two RBI.
The same two teams will match up for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 1:00 PM. The first game will be a nine-inning game, followed by a seven-inning contest.
