Rowing Competes at Kerr Cup

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham rowing squad traveled down to Philadelphia on Saturday to compete in the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River where the varsity 8 placed third.

The Fordham varsity 8 covered the course in a time of 6:38.8, about seven seconds behind Drexel and ten seconds behind the winner, Washington College, but in front of Atlantic 10 rivals La Salle, who placed fourth. Villanova took fifth and Philadelphia University sixth to round out the race. The freshman 8 was comprised of Sarah Champlin (8), Maggie Familetti (7), Kate Malcolm (6), Maureen McGinn (5), Wendy Amidon (4), Tessa Bloechl (3), Alexandria Smith (2) and Anne Hayes (1) with Arry Waitkus at coxswain.

The Fordham freshman 4 entry finished second in its heat in 7:13.1, behind Drexel but ahead of Bryn Mawr and NYU to advance to the finals where the Rams placed fifth in a time of 7:45.2 in front of Villanova B. Drexel won the race followed by Villanova A, Penn State and Dowling with the Rams fifth. The freshman 4 was made up of Maia Castillo (4), Rachel Wilwerding (3), Elan Saynay (2) and Christina Costello (1) with Arry Waitkus at coxswain.

The varsity 4 of Sarah Tully (4), Alexandra Leen (3), Kasia Wlodarkiewicz (2) and Megan Sullivan (1), with Rachel Sortino at coxswain, qualified for the finals by taking third in its heat in 6:59.5, behind Penn State and less than a second behind Villanova but ahead of Bryn Mawr, Loyola and NYU. In the finals, Fordham placed fifth, beating Stony Brook to the line but coming in behind Villanova, Philadelphia University, Drexel and Bryn Mawr.

The Rams also entered a shell in the second varsity 8 where it placed second, finishing behind Drexel but ahead of La Salle and Sarah Lawrence, and in the freshman/novice 4 race, placing fourth in the finals in 6:49.8, behind Drexel, La Salle and Villanova. The varsity 8 was comprised of Alexandra McDonald (8), Nicole Arrato (7), Katelyn Lakes (6), Maureen White (5), Elizabeth Helmer (4), Ashleigh Aitchison (3), Ashley Hawkesworth (2) and Jessica LaJoie (1) with Rachel Sortino at coxswain.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, May 4, as they compete in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
