The Fordham University rowing squad traveled down to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to compete in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River on Saturday where the junior varsity 8 came up just short of advancing to the semifinals.
The Fordham second varsity 8 of Sossi Megan (8), Tecla Di Francesco (7), Allie Fitzmorris (6), Jenna Kocsis (5), Alexandra Leen (4), MariaLuisa Capuano (3), Courtney Cambria (2) and Jenn Amoroso (bow) with Alexandra Anello at coxswain finished fourth in its heat in 7:21.96, behind Kansas, Old Dominion and UConn. The top there boats from each heat advanced to the semifinals along with the next three fastest times. Fordham's time was just 0.32 seconds behind Temple's 7:21.64 for the final qualifying spot.
The Fordham varsity 8 finished fourth in its heat in 7:15.67, beating Colgate and Villanova to the line but placing behind Barry (6:56.39), Rutgers (7:05.95) and UConn (7:07.87). The varsity 8 was comprised of Jenny Looby (8), Alexandra McDonald (7), Jessica LaJoie (6), Elizabeth Helmer (5), Ashleigh Aitchison (4), Katelyn Lakes (3), Nicole Arrato (2) and Ashley Hawkesworth (bow) with coxswain Rachel Sortino.
The freshman/novice four placed fourth in its heat in a time of 9:25.75, beating Charleston to the line but finishing behind Old Dominion (8:19.50), UMass B (8:36.90) and Carnegie Mellon (9:16.03). The Fordham freshman/novice four was made up of Elan Saynay (4), Rachel Wilwerding (3), Ashley Schilling (2) and Tessa Bloechl (bow) with Arry Waitkus at coxswain.
The Fordham freshman/novice 8 of Sarah Champlin (8), Maureen McGinn (7), Wendy Amidon (6), Maggie Familetti (5), Alexandria Smith (4), Kiersten Schmidheiser (3), Maia Castillo (2) and Anne Hayes (bow) with Arry Waitkus at coxswain, took fifth in its heat in 7:56.76, behind Drexel (7:08.03), Alabama (7:12.35), La Salle (7:37.76) and New Hampshire (7:41.87) but ahead of MIT.
The varsity 4 took fifth in its heat in 8:28.33, ahead of Maryland but behind Northeastern (8:08.87), Villanova B (8:15.13), Delaware (8:23.97) and UConn (8:26.78). The varsity 4 was comprised of Megan Sullivan (4), Kasia Wlodarkiewicz (3), Jillian Stackman (2) and Sarah Tully (bow) with Lauren Dzialo at coxswain.
The Fordham rowing squad will return to action on Saturday, April 20, as they travel to Philadelphia to compete in the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River.
