Rowing Competes at Sacred Heart Invitational

The Fordham crew ventured up to Shelton, Connecticut, where they competed in the Sacred Heart University Invitational on the Housatonic River on Saturday with the varsity 4, the freshman/novice 8 and the second varsity 8 winning their races.

The Fordham varsity 4 A easily won its race, crossing the line in 9:35.50, well ahead of the Fordham B boat which turned in a 9:58.60 clocking. The Fordham B boat was followed by Fairfield (10:10.70), Drake (10:17.70), Sacred Heart (10:31.40) and Robert Morris (10:35.70). The varsity 4 was comprised of Elizabeth Helmer, Katelyn Lakes, Jessica LaJoie and Ashley Hawkesworth with Rachel Sortino at coxswain while the Fordham B shell was made up of Megan Sullivan, MariaLuisa Capuano, Jillian Stackman and Sarah Tully with Megan Feerickat coxswain.

The Fordham second varsity 8 also cruised to victory, finishing in 8:59.00, over 15 seconds in front of Robert Morris (9:14.20) and well ahead of Fairfield (9:49.80), Sacred Heart (9:58.70) and Iona (10:08.10). The second varsity 8 was comprised of Jenny Looby, Alexandra McDonald, Allie Fitzmorris, Jenna Kocsis, Alexandra Leen, Nicole Arrato, Courtney Cambria and Jenn Amoroso with Alexandra Anello at coxswain.

In the freshman/novice 8 race, Fordham again cruised to victory, covering the course in 9:29.00, almost 20 seconds ahead of Army (9:47.70) and well in front of Sacred Heart (10:13.40) and Fairfield (10:21.30). The freshmen/novice 8 was comprised of Sarah Champlin (stroke), Kate Malcolm (7), Wendy Amidon (6), Maureen McGinn (5), Alexandria Smith (4), Maggie Familetti (3), Maia Castillo (2) and Anne Hayes (bow) with Arry Waitkusat coxswain.

The Rams also entered a boat in the varsity 8, placing second in the race. Fairfield won the varsity 8 competition in 8:51.40 with the Rams in second in 9:04.30. Following Fordham was Robert Morris (9:09.80), Iona (9:17.10), Drake (9:26.70) and Sacred Heart (10:32.60). The Fordham varsity 8 was made up of Elizabeth Helmer, Katelyn Lakes, Jessica LaJoie, Ashley Hawkesworth, Sossi Megan, Kasia Wlodarkiewicz, Ashleigh Aitchison and MariaLuisa Capuano with Rachel Sortinoat coxswain.

The freshmen/novice 4 boat also raced, placing fifth behind Fairfield (9:32.28), Robert Morris (10:09.98), Sacred Heart (10:21.68), and Army (10:52.08). The freshman/novice 4 was Elan Saynay (4) Kiersten Schmidheiser (3), Ashley Schilling (2) and Rachel Wilwerding (bow) with Arry Waitkusat coxswain.

"There was a lot to work on in the week after the Murphy Cup, but the novice group rose to the challenge of making some major technical changes throughout the week," said assistant coach Nick Dawe. "The boat is improving consistently which is promising as the season continues to become more competitive."

The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 13, as they compete in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
