Rowing Competes at Murphy Cup

The Fordham rowing squad competed at the Murphy Cup Regatta held on Saturday on the Cooper River where the Varsity 8 placed sixth in the petite final and the JV8 placed sixth in the finals.

The varsity 8 started the day placing fourth in its heat to earn a spot in the petite finals. In the heat, the Rams crossed the line in 6:54.05, ahead of Lehigh and Pittsburgh but behind winners Bucknell, runner-up Rutgers and third place Colgate

In the petite finals, the Rams placed sixth in 7:09.61, behind Drexel (6:55.22), Rutgers (6:56.59), Connecticut (6:59.74), Colgate (7:02.27) and La Salle (7:05.06). The Fordham varsity 8 was comprised of Ashleigh Aitchison, Elizabeth Helmer, Jessica LaJoie, Ashley Hawkesworth, Allie Fitzmorris, Katelyn Lakes, Maureen White, Nicole Arrato with Rachel Sortino at coxswain.

The junior varsity 8 placed second in its heat to advance to the finals where the boat placed sixth. In the heat, the Rams were just beaten to the finish line by Buffalo, who covered the course in 7:00.98 while the Rams clocked a 7:04.97, ahead of Bucknell (7:06.19), Connecticut (7:10.75), Villanova (7:32.49) and Haverford (10:08.37).

In the junior varsity 8 finals, Navy won the race in a time of 6:58.20, followed by Buffalo (7:02.92), Drexel (7:03.65), Connecticut (7:10.60), Bucknell (7:13.84) and Fordham (7:20.98). The Fordham junior varisty 8 was comprised of Sossi Megan, Alexandra McDonald, Jillian Stackman, Kasia Wlodarkiewicz, Tecla Di Francesco, Jenna Kocsis, Jenny Looby and Sarah Tully with Alexandra Anello at coxswain.

The Rams also raced a lightweight 4 that took second, just behind Bucknell. The Bison won the race in 8:05.97 with Fordham second in 8:09.21, well ahead of Pittsburgh (8:35.97). The Fordham lightweight four was made up of Megan Sullivan, MariaLuisa Capuano, Courtney Cambria, and Jenn Amoroso with Alexandra Anello at coxswain.

The novice 8 took fifth in its heat in a time of 8:15.93. Drexel won the heat followed by Williams, Buffalo and Delaware. The Fordham novice 8 was comprised of Sarah Champlin, Gabrielle Robertson, Kate Malcolm, Wendy Amidon, Alexandria Smith, Anne Hayes, Maia Castillo and Maureen McGinn with Arry Waitkus at coxswain.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 6, as they compete in the Sacred Heart Invitational on the Housatonic River in Fairfield, Conn.
