After an almost three week layoff from competition, the Fordham University men's tennis team returned to action on Friday at Sacred Heart, defeating the Pioneers, 6-1.
Fordham opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of three doubles matches. Max Peara and Matty Najfeld joined forces to win at second doubles over Luka Bagi and Jeremy Shuskus, 8-6, while Alex DeRienzo and Michael Puntillo defeated John Lopresti and Justin Pagan at the third position, 8-5.
The Rams then dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches. Srikar Alla won at first singles over James Barnhart, coming back to win the second and third sets, 6-2 and 6-0, respectively, after dropping the first set, 7-6.
DeRienzo and Puntillo also need three sets to win at third and fourth singles, respectively. DeRienzo took the first from Lopresti, 6-3, but lost the second, 7-6 (9-7). He came back to take the third set tiebreaker, 10-3, for the win.
Puntillo dropped his first set at the fourth spot to Matt Dean, 6-1, but came back to win the second, 6-2, and the third, 6-0.
Jan Krouham and Peder Gram also picked up singles wins for the Rams with Krouham defeating Jeremy Shuskus, 6-2, 7-5, at fifth singles and Gram upending Mike Provenzano, 7-6, 7-5, at the sixth position.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, March 24, as they host Temple University at Sound Shore Tennis at 4:00 PM.
