BRONX, N.Y. -
After a heartbreaking loss in the final of the Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn on Saturday, the Rams have some unfinished business to take care of. Fordham will host Army in the opening round of the 2013 Postseason WNIT on Thursday night at 7 PM.
SERIES HISTORY: The Rams and Black Knights, despite not having played since 1995, are certainly no strangers to one another.
Army and Fordham have a rich history dating back to the late 1970s, not long after both institutions became co-educational (Fordham's first class of women graduated in 1968, while West Point saw it's first class of female second lieutenants commissioned in 1980).
Overall, the Rams are 15-8 against the Black Knights in 23 meetings all-time.
SCOUTING ARMY: If you're not a fan of gritty, hard-nosed basketball, the Rose Hill Gym is the not the place you want to be on Thursday night. Fordham and Army enter their First Round WNIT game as two of the best defenses in the country, with the Rams coming in at 16th in the nation in scoring defense and Army ranking seventh in the country in that same category.
Offensively, the Black Knights are led by Anna Simmers, a ferocious 5'9" senior guard from Anchorage, Alaska, who leads Army in scoring with just a shade under 14 points per outing. She also ranks second on the team in assists and third in rebounding.
Simmers' backcourt mate, Kelsey Minato, has put up a tremendous effort this season in her freshman campaign for the Black Knights. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native averages 12.8 points per game and led the Patriot League in three-point shooting with a 38 percent average from downtown.
The Patriot League Regular Season Co-Champions, Army suffered a disappointing first round defeat to Colgate.
