It may have been delayed for a day by the weather, but the Fordham University women's tennis squad got its spring break trip to Florida off on the right foot, defeating Radford, 4-3, at the Lake Cane Tennis Center on Wednesday night.
The Rams opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches. Amy Simidian and Sarah Ali took first doubles from Taylor Newman and Meg Napolitano, 8-4, while Bella Genkina and Angelika Dabu paired up to win at second doubles over Hana Babic and Allison Michael, 8-5. Anika Novacek and Julie Leong made it a clean doubles sweep for Fordham with an 8-4 win over Gemma Valls and Taylor Fay at the third position.
Fordham then took the match by winning three singles matches with Dabu, Leong and Novacek winning at fourth through sixth singles, respectively, all in straight sets. Dabu bested Napolitan at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4, while Leong was victorious over Fay at the fifth spot, 6-3, 6-1, and Novacek took sixth singles from Michael, 6-2, 6-0.
Simidian and Ali almost picked up singles points for Fordham with Simidian taking the first set from Valls, 6-3, at first singles before dropping the second, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 10-8. Similarly, Ali defeated Newman 6-1 in the first set at second singles but Newman rebounded to win the second, 7-5, and the tiebreaker, 10-8.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, March 14, as they face Quinnipiac University in Orlando, Florida, at 7:00 PM.
