The Fordham University men's tennis team ventured into Queens today to face St. John's University at the National Tennis Center where the Rams fell to the Red Storm, 7-0.
The Rams opened the match by dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Matty Najfeld and Max Peara picked up the doubles win for Fordham, upending Mark Mozer and Hugo Morth, 8-6. But Srikar Alla and J.J. Tauil fell at first doubles to Vasko Mladenov and Mike Lampa, 8-3, and Alex DeRienzo and Michael Puntillo lost to Michael-John Every and Valentin Mihai at the third position, 8-1.
In singles play, Najfeld almost picked up a point for the Rams, taking the first set at second singes from Mihai, 6-4, before dropping the second, 7-6. Najfeld was then trailing 4-1 in the tiebreaker before being forced to retire due to injury.
In others singles matches, Alla was bested by Mladenov, 6-2, 6-4; Puntillo fell at third singles to Mozer, 6-2, 6-0, Peara was upended at the fourth position by Lampa, 6-0, 6-1, DeRienzo was defeated by Morth at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Jan Krouham fell to Michael-John Every, 6-2, 6-2, at the sixth spot.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, March 3, as they host George Washington University at the National Tennis Center at 6:00 PM.
