Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham University Head Football Coach Joe Moorhead announced the signing of 17 football players to letters of intent with Fordham for the 2013 season.
Moorhead, who enters his second season on Rose Hill, brings his second recruiting class to Fordham. Last year, Moorhead guided the Rams to a 6-5 overall record, after the team went 1-10 in 2011, the second best turnaround in the NCAA FCS.
The 2013 class is the fourth recruiting class for the Rams that include members who will receive athletic scholarships. Fordham started awarding scholarship to the 2010 incoming class, marking the first time that Fordham awarded football scholarships since 1954.
The new class features ten offensive players and six defensive players, along with one player who can play on either side of the ball. By position, defensive linemen lead the way with five, followed by four each at wide receiver and offensive linemen. The newcomers also include a quarterback, running back, defensive back and one listed as athlete.
The 17 newcomers hail from nine different states, from Connecticut to Louisiana, and one foreign country (Canada). Five of the 2013 recruits are from New York with two others coming from three other states: New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida. The other states represented are Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. There are also two transfers among the 17.
The new recruiting class will join eleven starters who return from the 2012 season, six on the defensive side of the ball and five on the offensive side.
"We added size on both sides of the ball which goes along with our philosophy of controlling both sides of the ball," said Moorhead. "We also were able to add some quality skills players today and did it with nine players from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut which corresponds with our recruiting philosophy of bringing in as many recruits as possible within a two hours radius of the campus."
The Rams are tentatively scheduled to open their 114th season of varsity football on Saturday, August 31, when they host the University Rhode Island Rams on Jack Coffey Field. Fordham is entering its 24th season as a member of the NCAA FCS Patriot League.
