The Fordham University men's tennis team ventured down to Ambler, Pennsylvania, on Friday to play the Saint Joseph's University Hawks in the Upper Dublin Sports Center where the Hawks upended the Rams, 5-2.
Srikar Alla and Matty Najfeld pick up the points for the Rams, taking first and second singles, respectively.
The Rams opened the match dropping the doubles point despite an 8-4 win by Alex DeRienzo and Michael Puntillo at second doubles over Max Montague and Jose Sierra. The other two doubles matches were close with Alla and Max Peara falling at first doubles to Dan Barrus and Jeff Kessler, 8-5, and Jan Krouham and Najfeld being defeated by Pierre Brondeau and Alex Veronis at the third position, 8-6.
In singles play, Alla and Najfeld both won in straight sets with Alla besting Tommy Gates, 6-2, 6-2, at first singles and Najfeld upending Veronis, 6-4, 6-3, at the second spot.
The Rams almost picked up a point at the sixth position as Krouham took the first set from Kessler, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-2, and the super tiebreaker, 10-5.
Other singles players for the Rams were Peara, who fell to Sierra at third singles, 6-3, 6-2, DeRienzo, who dropped fourth singles to Brondeau, 6-2, 6-1, and J.J. Tauil, who was defeated by Montague at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-2.
The Rams return to action on Friday, March 1, as they travel into Queens to face St. John's University at the National Tennis Center beginning at noon.
