Behind a 16-hit barrage, which included Matthew Cianci's first career four-hit game, the Fordham Rams won the series finale with the Michigan Wolverines by a 14-11 score at the New York Mets Training Complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Michigan won the opening end of Saturday's doubleheader by a 10-2 score.
With the split, Fordham moves to 1-2, while Michigan is 2-4.
In game one, Michigan quickly opened the scoring in the second inning, when Kevin White led off with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Jusick.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 5-0 after a three-run fourth inning and a single run in the fifth. The fourth inning saw RBI-doubles from both Jusick and Dylan Delaney, while John DiLaura had an RBI-single. In the fifth, Jusick delivered again with an RBI-single to score White, who had singled and stole second.
The Rams found the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the lead to 5-2. With one out, Tim Swatek was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI-double by Ryan Lee. After a balk advanced Lee to third, Mike Mauri plated Lee with a sacrifice fly to right.
Michigan answered back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run each in the seventh and eighth innings to finish with a 10-2 victory, highlighted by a two-run double by Michael O'Neill and a solo home run by Travis Maezes.
Evan Hill (1-0) earned the win for Michigan, giving up two run on five hits over 5.2 innings of work, while Chad Jasman closed out the contest with the save, striking out five over the final 3.1 innings. Fordham's Rich Anastasi (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, while reliever Brett Kennedy gave up five runs in 2.1 innings. Dan Sorine and Cody Johnson each pitch an inning of relief to close out the game, with Johnson recording three strikeouts.
At the plate, Fordham was limited to five hits, as Lee was 1-for-4 with an RBI-double and a run scored, while Swatek, Matthew Cianci and Mauri were all 1-for-3. Charles Galiano had the Rams' final hit of game one.
In game two, the Fordham bats came alive, registering 16 hits in a 14-11 win over the Wolverines.
Fordham wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring four times in the first and five times in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
Cianci led off with a single, and moved to second on an error, which allowed Swatek to reach base. Mauri then doubled home both runners for a 2-0 lead. Lee followed with a single, while Galiano laced a triple down the right field line, plating both runners for a 4-0 edge.
In the second, Cianci got things started again with a one-out single, where he advanced to third as the rightfielder overran the ball. Cianci quickly scored on a sacrifice fly by Joseph Runco, making it a 5-0 score. Swatek continued the offense with an infield single and a stolen base before being driven in by a Mauri single. After a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, Ryan Phelan delivered a two-run single, while Ian Edmiston had an RBI-single later in the frame to give Fordham a 9-0 lead.
After Michigan got a run back in the bottom of the second, Fordham scored twice more in the fourth for an 11-1 advantage. Lee connected for a one-out double and scored on an RBI-single from Galiano, his third run driven in. One out later, Edmiston doubled to left center, scoring Galiano.
Michigan inched their way back into the game, scoring twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, once in the sixth, and once in the seventh, making it an 11-6 contest. Fordham replied with three more runs in the top of the eighth, taking advantage an error, balk, and a wild pitch, regaining an eight-run lead, 14-6.
The Wolverines would not go away however, scoring twice in the eighth and then three times in the ninth to get within, 14-11, and had the bases loaded with two outs. Swatek though got Kevin White to strike out looking and end the game.
For Fordham, Chris Pike (1-0) got the win, as he struck out seven over five innings of work, allowing four runs on six hits. Jeremy Adel (1 IP, 1 ER), Joseph Serrapica (2 IP, 0 ER), and Swatek (1 IP, 2 ER) closed out the final four innings.
At the plate, Cianci had his first career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Edmiston had his first three-hit game at 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Mauri and Swatek were each 2-for-5 with three runs with Mauri adding three RBI. Galiano also had three RBI to go with two hits and two runs scored, while Lee scored three runs and had a 2-for-4 day.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on March 1, as the Rams open a three-game series at Wichita State, beginning at 4:00 PM.
