Box Score

Newark, N.J. - The Fordham women's tennis team opened its spring season on Saturday, taking on the NJIT Highlanders in Newark, New Jersey. The Rams put forth a strong effort as two matches went three sets with all three doubles matches being close, but NJIT would take the match by a final count of 6-1.

The match opened with three close doubles matches, but all three would go to the Highlanders. NJIT's Ksenia Kuzmenko and Jana Luste topped Fordham's first doubles duo of Amy Simidian and Anika Novacek, 8-6, while Carolina Zanotta and Natalia Melibeu defeated Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina, 8-5. Monika Graff and Hannelore MacDonald completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Forhdam's Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong.

In singles' action, Leong got the Rams on the board at fifth singles, defeating Zanotta, 7-6, 6-3.

That would turn out to be the lone Fordham point on the day, as the Rams came out on the short end of two three-set matches. At first singles, Simidian fell to Kuzmenko, 4-6, 6-2, and 6-4, while at sixth singles, Novacek was edged by Martina Tripcovici, 5-7, 6-4, and 10-6 in a super tie-breaker.

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on February 9th, as the Rams play at Seton Hall, beginning at 6:00 PM.
