The 45
th edition of The Battle of the Bronx was all Fordham, as six Rams scored at least seven points to lift the women of Rose Hill to a 71-46 victory over Manhattan in Riverdale.
The win marked Fordham's eighth straight game coming out on the winning end, matching the team's longest streak from last season and tying for the third-longest in program history.
Fordham's 9-2 record through 11 games makes it the second-best start in school history, ranking only behind the 1976-77 squad that went 10-1.
Abigail Corning was the only Ram to score in double figures, tallying 12 points, nine boards, five assists, four steals, and no turnovers.
Hannah Missry connected on three shots from beyond the arc, finishing with nine points, while fellow freshman
Danielle Padovano registered eight. Two other Rams,
Emily Tapio and
Samantha Clark, also added eight points for Fordham.
Erin Rooney failed to reach double digits for the first time this season, but the Christchurch, New Zealand, native more than made up for it in other facets of the game. The preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection tallied seven points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in the win.
The Rams came out of the gate hot in the first half, scoring the first nine points of the game and forcing a Manhattan timeout just two and a half minutes into the contest.
Manhattan got on the board a short time later and cut the Fordham lead to five, 11-6, on an Allison Skrec jumper, but the Rams soon went on another run. Corning converted on a three and Nwachuwu nailed a 12-footer to bump the Fordham lead to double digits, but Manhattan narrowed the lead back down to five less than two minutes later.
Up 16-11, the Rams uncorked an 8-0 run, with five points coming from Rooney and Missry chipping in a triple to put Fordham ahead 24-11 with just under eight minutes to go in the half.
Manhattan would cut the lead to single digits on two occasions over the next few minutes, but Tapio had two buckets to end the half, sending Fordham into the intermission with a 38-25 advantage.
They scored the first nine points of the first half, and the Rams had similar success to start half number two. Corning and Missry drained from deep and Tapio connected on a jumper, capping an 8-0 run to start the second stanza and putting Fordham ahead 46-25 less than three minutes into the half.
The Rams would continue to build their lead over the next few minutes, as Padovano's second three-pointer of the game made it 53-30 in favor of Fordham with just over 12 minutes to go.
Fordham never let its intensity dip over the game's closing minutes, keeping Manhattan at least 20 points back for the rest of the contest.
The Rams will take the next few days off before returning to the Rose Hill Gym for the annual Fordham Holiday Classic on December 29th. Tip-off against UNC-Greensboro is at 1 P.M.
