Water Polo Drops Second Match at CWPA Championship

Lenihan Leads Way With Three Goals

Patrick Lenihan

Johns Hopkins' Langdon Froomer and Matt Fraser both registered three goals as Blue Jays topped the Fordham Rams, 11-8, at the 2013 CWPA Championship at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

Johns Hopkins never trailed against the Rams as Conor Flemming cashed in with 6:53 left in the opening quarter for a man-up score and a 1-0 lead.

Fordham answered Flemming's six-on-five marker with one of their own at 4:04 as Ben Clinkinbeard beat the Hopkins' defense to convert on an exclusion chance to knot the score.

However, the Blue Jays' offense took flight over final four minutes of the first quarter as Fraser fired in another man-up goal at 3:49 and Flemming flung home a natural tally at 3:02 to provide Hopkins at 3-1 lead entering the second quarter.

Following a period opening marker at 5:51 by Peter Bergum to move Fordham within 3-2, Hopkins received natural and five-meter penalty shot tallies by Garrett Davidson and Froomer at 5:18 and 4:48, respectively, to push the margin to 5-2.

The Rams trimmed the margin back to a pair by the conclusion of the first half as Andrew Gonzalez finished a man-up chance at 3:02 and Patrick Lenihan floated in a natural score at 1:11 to sandwich a marker by Hopkins' Johnny Beal at 1:24 to make it 6-4 at the break.

Fordham continued to chip away at the lead to start the second half as Clinkinbeard drilled in a shot at 6:47, but the Blue Jays received man-up (6:07) and even-strength (3:48) strikes from Froomer to increase the spread to 8-5.

Lenihan closed out the scoring in the third quarter by whipping a shot past JHU goalie Danny Ovelar at 2:36 to close the Rams to within 8-6 entering the final period of play.
However the Blue Jays put together a three-goal fourth quarter to win by an 11-8 final.

For Fordham, Lenihan led the way for Fordham with a hat trick, while Clinkinbeard (two), Bobby Wurtz, Bergum, and Gonzalez rounded out the scoring.

Between the pipes, Ovelar notched eight saves to claim the win with Fordham's Noah LeBeau swatting away nine shots in suffering the loss.

The Rams will wrap up their stay at the CWPA Championship in the 11th place match against Iona on Sunday at 9:00 AM.
