Despite again playing without three of their top players, the Fordham University men's tennis squad ventured up to the Stamford Indoor Courts to face Fairfield University where the Rams were edged by the Stags, 4-3.
After dropping the doubles point, the Rams came back in singles play, taking three of the six matches before coming up short. Srikar Alla took first singles from Ian Tesmond in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, while Matty Najfeld, playing in his first match for the Rams, defeated Dennis Zlobinskyat the second position, also in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0.
Max Peara picked up the third singles win for the Rams, dropping the first set to George Tioutine at fourth singles, 7-6, before coming back to win the second, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-8.
In other singles action, J.J. Tauil fell at third singles when he defaulted due to illness in a match with Erik Kremheller, Jan Krouhan was defeated by Ofir Solomon at the fifth spot, 6-1, 6-2, and Alex DeRienzo was upended by Cam Amyot at sixth singles, 7-5, 6-2.
The match opened with Fairdfield taking the doubles point, winning the two finished doubles matches. Solomon and Zlobinsky defeated Krouham and DeRienzo at second doubles, 8-0, while Kremheller and Tioutine bested Tauil and Najfeld at the third position, 8-4.
Fordham was without three of their top players, Kuba Kowalski, who entered the spring ranked #110 in the ITA national ranking and #12 in the ITA Northeast Regional rankings, Mischa Koran, and Emilio Mora, who all missed the match due to injury/illnes.
The Rams, now 4-2 on the year, return to action on Friday, February 1, as they venture into Manhattan to face the Columbia University Lions at 2:00 p.m.
