The 12th Annual Rose Hill Classic got underway on Friday, and for the first time in tournament history, every match went the distance, putting together four wild affairs between the collection of five teams. After day one, NJIT is 1-0, Cornell, Fordham, and Stony Brook are 1-1, and Bucknell is 0-1.
Match 1
Fordham 3, Cornell 2
Fordham's Maria Rodenberg tied a school record with a career-high eight service aces, which included one on match point to give the Rams a 3-2 victory over the Cornell Big Red in the opening match of the 2012 Rose Hill Classic. Final set scores were 28-26, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, and 15-9.
After Fordham won the first two sets, Cornell rallied back with two set wins of its own to force the deciding set. In the fifth se t, the score was tied at seven, when the Rams reeled off six straight points to lead 13-7, highlighted by two aces by Lisa Hipp. The team rallied back-and-forth with match point going to the Rams on Rodenberg's eighth ace of the match.
Along with the eight aces, Rodenberg added 10 digs and four assists, while Hipp had a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs. Carina Thompson also chipped in ten kills with Sara Konkel dishing out 22 assists and six digs.
For Cornell, Kelly Reinke finished with 36 assists, 13 digs, and two kills, while Breanna Wong had 14 kills.
Match 2
NJIT 3, Stony Brook 2
The NJIT Highlander duo of Janet Snell and Fran Edmondson totaled 37 kills and 15 digs, as they led the Highlanders to a five-set victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves in match two of the Rose Hill Classic. Final set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 18-25, and 15-12.
The seesaw affair was decided in the fifth set, as Stony Brook led 12-10. NJIT then ended the match with five consecutive points, which included two blocks and an ace to win the final set, 15-12.
For NJIT, Snell finished with 19 kills and seven digs, while Edmondson had 18 kills, eight digs, and three blocks.
For Stony Brook, Melissa Rigo notched a double-double with a match-high 22 kills and 15 digs, while Evann Slaughter had 15 kills and seven blocks.
Match 3
Cornell 3, Bucknell 2
After dropping its opening match of the tournament, as well as the first two set against Bucknell, the Cornell Big Red stormed back with three straight set wins to win the match over the Bison. Final set scores were 20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-12, and 17-15.
In the fifth set, the teams were tied on seven occasions with the final tie at 15 all. Cornell then got a kill by Kelly Marble and a set error by Bucknell to earn the comeback victory.
For Cornell, Kelly Reinke set the table once against for the Big Red, tallying 36 assists, three aces, four digs, and three kills in the match, while Breanna Wong, Rachel D'Epagnier and Marble each had 11 kills.
For Bucknell, Claire Healy notched 11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double, while Jessica Serrato had nine kills and 10 digs.
Match 4
Stony Brook 3, Fordham 2
The epic day of matches at the Rose Hill Classic ended with Stony Brook coming back from down two sets to one to defeat Fordham in five. Final set scores were 17-25, 25-18, 21-25, 29-27, and 15-13.
The Rams had three match point in the fourth set but could not convert on any, allowing the Seawolves to force the deciding fifth set. In the end, the score was knotted at 13, when the Seawolves earned consecutive points on a block error and an attack error by the Rams to win the match.
For Fordham, Brennan Delsing finished with a team-high 16 kills to go with five digs, three blocks and two aces, while Lisa Hipp had her second double-double of the day with 14 kills and 15 digs. Defensively, Maria Rodenberg had 18 digs, to go with four assists and one aces.
Stony Brook was led by Melissa Rigo, who finished the match with 19 kills , seven digs, and four blocks, while Evann Slaughter had 15 kills and five blocks.
Day two of the Rose Hill Classic start on Saturday at 9:00 AM.
