The Fordham University women's soccer squad had its chances against St. John's on Friday night on Jack Coffey Field, outshooting the visitors, 13-6, but the Rams couldn't find the back of the net, falling to the Red Storm, 2-0. With the loss, Fordham falls to 1-4 while St. John's evens its record at 3-3.
St. John's opened the scoring early off a corner kick in the fifth minute. The kick was sent to the far side of the net where it was centered into the box. A Fordham defender tried to clear the ball but the clearing attempt landed at the foot of the Red Storm's Emily Cubbage, who one-timed it past Fordham keeper Ally White.
The Rams had a chance for an equalizer 15 minutes later as St. John's was whistled for a penalty in the box. Kristina Maksuti lined up to take the penalty kick but the ball was saved by St. John's keeper Ellen Conway. However, the referee ruled that Conway left the line early and awarded Maksuti another try. Unfortunately for the Rams, the second shot was much like the first as Conway got her leg on a shot that Maksuti sent towards the lower right corner.
The score remained 1-0 into the intermission before the Rams had another opportunity to even the game early in the second half. Just under five minutes into the period, Annie Worden beat Conway from about 15 yards out but the shot deflected off the top of the cross bar and out of play.
St. John's added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Morgan Ritter fed a long ball to Cubbage and Cubbage beat the Fordham defense to the ball, getting off a chip shot from 14 yards out that beat White to the top left corner for her second goal of the game and third of the year.
Maksuti and Worden led the Rams combing for ten of the team's 13 shots (each had five). White made two saves in net for the Rams while Conway finished with four for the Red Storm.
The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, September 9th, as they travel to Maryland to take on the University of Maryland at 1:00 p.m.
