The Fordham University football Rams continue their 2012 season by traveling into Manhattan to face the Columbia University Lions at the Baker Athletic Complex on Saturday, September 22nd, at 12:30 p.m. in the annual Liberty Cup game.
The game will be broadcast live on the internet at wfuv.org with Michael Watts and D.J. Sixsmith handling the announcing chores and Kenny Ducey on the sidelines. The game can also been seen online by clicking here.
The Rams enter the Columbia game with a 2-1 record after defeating Cornell University, 34-27, on Jack Coffey Field last Saturday as Carlton Koonce rushed for a career-high 176 yards and two touchdowns.
Columbia enters the game after opening its 2012 season with a 10-9 win over Marist at the Baker Athletic Complex last week.
This will be the 21st meeting between Fordham and Columbia on the gridiron with the Lions leading the all-time series, which started in 1890, 12-8. Fordham has won the past two meetings and six of the past eight, including a 21-14 win on Jack Coffey Field last year as Peter Maetzold completed 22 of 30 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Darryl Whiting rushed 18 times for 100 yards and Nick Womack returned an interception 100 yards for a score. Fordham leads the all-time Liberty Cup series, 6-4.
The Liberty Cup
As two of the three NCAA Division I institutions in New York City to sponsor football, Fordham University and Columbia University decided in 2002 to compete for a special trophy in their annual game. Thus was born the Liberty Cup.
The idea behind the Liberty Cup is to honor the alumni of both schools who were lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Cup also honors all of those who lost their lives on September 11th, including members of the various city and state agencies (FDNY, NYPD, EMS, Port Authority, etc.). Each school has created a scholarship fund with the host school donating the proceeds of the game to their respective fund.
In addition to competing for the Liberty Cup, a game Most Valuable Player is chosen following each year's contest.
Last year, the Rams defeated the Lions, 21-14, on Coffey Field to retain possession of the cup for the second straight year.
