Fordham softball coach Bridget Orchard announced the addition of Charisse Mariconda as an assistant coach today. Mariconda joins the Rams' staff after two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Radford and an outstanding playing career at Virginia Tech.
For the past two seasons, Mariconda was with Radford University in the Big South Conference, where she assisted in all areas, which included working with the infielders and the day-to-day operations of the program. She helped the Highlanders to a 38-21 record in 2011 and a 34-21 record in 2012, winning the Big South regular season title in both of those seasons.
Mariconda, a former Virginia Tech standout, made the short trip down I-81 after spending the five seasons in Blacksburg as a player and student assistant coach.
Following a stellar playing career with the Hokies, the native of Hollywood, Fla. worked under Virginia Tech skipper Scot Thomas in 2009-10, while finishing up her coursework and graduating with a degree in sociology in May of 2010.
As a four-year starter at third base and shortstop, Mariconda was a model of consistency as she started all 249 games played from 2006-09. She batted .313 with 47 doubles, 17 home runs, eight triples, scored 115 runs, had 136 RBI and stole 52 bases as she earned NFCA All-Region honors three times.
Mariconda was also a three-time All-ACC selection, which included first-team honors in 2008 and 2009, as well as an all-state honoree in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Her 2008 breakout season, which saw her bat a team-best .340 with nine doubles, 37 RBI and 36 runs scored, helped the Hokies reach the Women's College World Series, which included an upset of No. 4 seed Michigan in the Super Regionals.
In addition to her collegiate accomplishments, Mariconda participated in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Canada Cup in British Columbia as a member of the Puerto Rican National Team.
