Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Columbia Invitational

New York, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis squad opened it 2012 fall season at the Columbia Invitational this past weekend where Amy Simidian won a pair of A Flight back draw matches and Sarah Ali advanced to the B Flight quarterfinals.

Simidean opened A Flight singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Stephanie Do from Penn. She then moved to the back draw where she defeated Fairfield's Sharissa Ryan, 6-3, 4-6 (10-8) and Nevena Selakovic from St. John's, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.

Bella Genkina also competed in the A Flight singles, falling to Monica Yajima from Fairfield, 6-3, 7-5, and then losing to Binghamton's Sara Khotz, 6-2, 7-5, in the back draw.

In B Flight singles, Sarah Ali opened play with a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 win over Agatha Ambrozy of Binghamton before falling to top-seeded Amy He from Harvard, 6-4, 6-3.

Angelika Dabu also competed in the B Flight singles, falling to Harvard's Natalie Blosser, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

In C Flight singles action, Julie Leong opened play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Katrina Kovacevic before falling to number-one seed Amy Li from Harvard, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Hanna Fritzinger also played in the C Flight, falling to Penn's Jamie Yapp-Shing, 6-1, 7-5, and then dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Chantal Swiszcz from UMass.

Anika Novacek competed in D Flight singles, falling to Columbia's Amy Li, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8.

In doubles play, Simidian and Dabu fell to Yuliana Motyl and Swiszcz of Massachusetts in the A Flight while Novacek and Leong were victorious over Ksenia Mikhaylov and Terri Thomas of St. John's, 9-7, before falling to top-seeded Katrina Kovocevic and Kanika Vaidya of Columbia, 8-3.

The Rams will next be in action from September 21-23 when they compete at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
