Bronx, N.Y. -
All of them have been on campus for over two weeks for preseason practice. Some have even started their season already. But that didn't stop members of the Fordham University football, volleyball, women's soccer, water polo, track/cross country and cheerleading squads from spending part of their Sunday standing at the ready outside of the various dorms, helping the incoming freshmen unload their vehicles.
In what has become an annual event for the Rams, the student-athletes came to the aid of the Office of Residential Life by lending a hand to make move-in day run smoothly.
"The Residential Life Office helps us out when we open camp in the summer by allowing us to move in early," said Fordham head coach Joe Moorhead. "This is our way of thanking them and of welcoming the new students to Fordham."
The Rams were charged with aiding move in at Martyr's Court, Queens Court and at Alumni North, hauling the heavy goods, including refrigerators, televisions and cases of water, up flights of stairs, gleaning admiration from parents and students who thought they would have to do the heavy lifting themselves.
The women's volleyball team had the first shift, helping with move-in from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. after getting back last night from an appearance at the Boston College Invitational, the Rams' first action of the 2012 season. The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Wednesday night, August 29th, when the team opens its home schedule against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, beginning at 5:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
The football and women's soccer squads were next up as each helped from 9:00 a.m. until noon, with the football players being tasked with hauling the big items such as refrigerators and computers. Both teams had to pace themselves as each team had practice scheduled for later in the afternoon.
The women's soccer squad has already played three games this season, opening the year with losses to Michigan and Michigan State and then picking up its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Manhattan College on Jack Coffey Field on Friday night. They will return to action on Sunday, September 2nd, as they host the Marist College Red Foxes on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 p.m.
The football Rams are preparing for their season opener on Thursday night, August 30th, as they host the Lock Haven University Bald Eagles on Jack Coffey Field at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the first game as head coach for Fordham's Joe Moorhead, a 1996 Fordham graduate who was a four-year letter winner with the Rams as an undergraduate. Tickets for the game are available on the Fordham Athletic Website at www.fordhamsports.com.
The water polo Rams and the track and field squads had the final shift, helping out from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The water polo team open its 2012 season at the Brown Labor Day Tournament on September 1st and 2nd while the cross country team will open the 2012 season on Saturday, September 8th, as they host the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt Park at 10:30 a.m.
