Fordham head coach Joe Moorhead decided that the final scrimmage of the 2012 camp would be as close to game action as possible, splitting the team into Maroon and White squads that would square off against each other. The Maroon offense, which was comprised of members of the first team, displayed Moorhead's vision of a fast-tempo unit, scoring seven times while the Maroon defense kept the White squad out of the end zone.
"That was a great way to end the camp," Moorhead told the team following the scrimmage. "We talked about laying foundation for the program during the winter and spring and we have been building on that foundation during camp. Now the roof is on the house and we are ready to decorate the interior."
The Maroon offense got going from the first series, taking over on its own 25 after Patrick Murray's kickoff sailed into the end zone. Ryan Higgins moved the team down field, completing his first three pass attempts, the big one a completion to Carlton Koonce that gained 41 yards, moving the ball to the White 12. Three plays later, Koonce punched it in from the three to give the Maroon a 7-0 lead.
The Maroon defense held the White team to a three-and-out and Murray punted the ball back to the Maroon.
Michael Nebrich came on to quarterback the Maroon team and used his arm and legs to lead the unit to a score, rushing three times for 55 yards, including a 38-yard gain to move the ball to the seven, where he score on the next play. Nebrich also completed both of his pass attempts on the drive for 23 yards.
The Maroon defense again limited the White offense to just three plays and Kevin Levin's punt was blocked into the end zone for a Maroon safety.
The Maroon took over on its own 35 following the free kick and, on the fourth play of the drive, Higgins found Brian Wetzel in the flats for a 45-yard scoring play to give the Maroon a 16-0 lead.
The White offense was able to move the ball on the next series as Peter Maetzold completed two passes for eleven yards and then connected with Alex Leo on consecutive passes for another 16 yards to place the ball on the Maroon 44. But the drive would stall at midfield and Murray punted the ball to the end zone.
The Maroon squad started the ensuing drive with a 15-yard pass from Nebrich to Sam Ajala but three plays later, a Nebrich pass was tipped and intercepted by Nick Merino to end the threat.
Merino returned the interception to the Maroon 33 but the White squad couldn't take advantage of the turnover as a 44-yard Murray field goal attempt was blocked.
Higgins took over the Maroon offense on the next series and drove the unit to another score, completing a big third down pass to
Andrew Spanarkel to keep the drive going.
Jeramie Brown carried the ball on two of the final three plays of the drive, including an eight-yard scoring run to make it a 30-0 game.
The White squad had the ball to start the second half but couldn't pick up a first down and punted the ball back to the Maroon. A 40-yard Wetzel punt return gave the Maroon excellent field position and it took Nebrich one play to find the end zone, connecting with Ajala over the middle for the score.
The White offense was then able to move the ball to the 44 but couldn't get to midfield. Following the put, the Maroon offense again struck quick, this time on a 65-yard pass from Blake Wayne to Wetzel.
The White offense had a chance to put some points on the board on the next series as Maetzold moved the squad from its own 25 to the Maroon 27 where a 45-yard Murray field goal sailed wide. Maetzold completed four of five passes on the drive for 56 yards, the big play a 26-yard gain to David Lulgjuraj that would have been a bigger gain but was shortened due to a penalty.
On the final series of the scrimmage, Higgins recovered from being sacked by John LaSure on the first play to lead the Maroon unit to a score, completing all four passes on the drive for 59 yards while Jared Crayton picked up the other 26 yards on a pair of rushes, the final a 15-yard scoring romp.
