Bronx, N.Y. -
The preseason for the Fordham volleyball team has been an eventful one in 2012. From senior Randi Ewing's adventure at the London Olympics working for NBC to team functions at a Yankees-Rangers game and the Bronx Zoo, the preseason wrapped up on Sunday with a scrimmage, where the current Rams edged out a game alumni group in five sets.
When the team reported for preseason two weeks ago, the Rams were missing a player, as senior Randi Ewing was finishing up her work as an NBC intern at the London Olympics. She was primarily focused on the indoor volleyball coverage, meeting with all the teams and working as a production assistant for broadcasts.
While Ewing was in London, the rest of the Rams started their march toward the regular season opener, incorporating new players into the team, and getting returning players back in the groove. One of the ways the team does that is through team bonding functions, one of which this season, was a team excursion to Yankee Stadium for a Yankees-Rangers game.
With everyone back over the past week, Sunday's scrimmage was a nice test for the current Rams to gauge, where the team is at. The alumni scrimmage has been a few years in the making, and hopes to be an annual event the weekend prior to the start of the regular season.
"It was definitely a special function for us and the team, as not only is it a chance to test what we've done so far in preseason, but also serve as a networking and outreach opportunity to our alumni," said head coach Peter Volkert.
"This was a lot of fun today and it was awesome to play with the girls," said Jenna Hart, one of seven former volleyball players to play in the game. "This is something that keeps our group together, as so many of us are in the New York area, and it's something we've always wanted to do."
Along with Hart, the Fordham alumni team consisted of Lauren Fitzsimon, Bailey McKay, Katie Wells, Kim Capicotto, Megan Arend, and Brittany Daulton. The alumni put the current Rams on notice early, posting set wins in set two and three, before the current Rams rallied back to win the five-set match, 3-2.
The scrimmage was a precursor to the Fordham volleyball team's regular season opener in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts at the Boston College Invitational, where the Rams will face Texas Tech and Siena on Friday, August 24th, and Boston College and Binghamton on Saturday, August 25th.
