Bronx, N.Y. -
With the second week of the 2012 camp in the books, the Fordham football squad took to Jack Coffey Field for the second scrimmage of camp with both sides of the ball showing progress from the first scrimmage last Thursday. The offense scored nine touchdowns on the night while the defense came up with some big splays of its own.
The starting quarterback competition got a little more crowded with the addition of UConn transfer Michael Nebrich, who completed eight of nine passes for 63 yards and one touchdown while also rushing eleven times for 20 net yards. The other two signal callers also had a solid scrimmage with Peter Maetzold leading all passers, connecting on 13 of 18 passes for 131 yards, while Ryan Higgins completed seven of nine passes for 77 yards and two scores.
The receiving corps displayed its depth, with ten different players catching a pass, led by Dan Light, who hauled in five passes for 30 yards and one touchdown, and Blake Wayne and Andrew Spanarkel, who each caught four passes.
The scrimmage started off with the offense trapped deep inside its own territory, starting on the one. The defense didn't budge on the first series, holding the offense to three plays that didn't gain a yard. But on the second series, Jeramie Brown took the first play around the left side for a ten-yard gain.
The defense rebounded on the third series, allowing the offense out to the nine but stuffing Carlton Koonce on third-and-two.
The situation then changed to the offense taking over on its own 35 and the unit made quick work on the first series, as Higgins led the squad to the defense's 16 where he connected with Light in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Higgins completed all three pass attempts on the drive for 33 yards.
On the next possession, the defense held the offense to a three-and-out but the offense came back on the following series with Maetzold moving the unit down to the defense's 29. Patrick Murray came on and connected on a 45-yard field goal but the three points were negated by an illegal formation call against the offense and forced Murray to try again from 50 yards. On the second field goal attempt, John LaSure got a hand on the ball and deflected the kick away.
The offense made quick work of it on the next possession, covering the 65 yards on seven plays with Daniel Avedesian covering the final 14 on the ground for the score.
The next two series started on the offense's 45 and the defense dug in, forcing the offense to punt on each possession. The first series was aided by a Brett Biestek sack on the defense's 42 that moved the ball back to midfield.
On the third series from its own 45, the offense sustained a long drive, aided by three third down conversions and one fourth down conversion. The first down conversion came on the fourth play of the drive as Koonce gained two yards on fourth and one form the defense's 46. Three plays later, the offense faced a third and eight from the 30 but Nebrich connected with Nick Talbert for a 13-yard gain to keep the drive going. Nebrich and Talbert capped the drive as Nebrich threw a ball into the corner of the end zone and Talbert outleaped his defender for the score.
That play seemed to spark the offense, which scored on the next six series. Higgins led the offense to a score on the ensuing possession, moving the unit to the four where he hit Blake Wayne with a four-yard scoring strike.
The next three series started from the defense's 25, with the offense scoring on each of the three possessions. The first came on a ten-yard run from Koonce, the second on a 15-yard romp by Jared Crayton and the third on a first down pass from Nick Glogau to James Avedesian.
The offense then started the ensuing two possessions on the 15 and on the first series, Nebrich used his arm and legs to move the ball to the one where Koonce scored. On the second series, Brown rushed three straight times, the final a four-yard scoring run.
The scrimmage ended with the two minute drill as Maetzold moved the offense from its own 24 to the defense's 18 but with just over 13 seconds left, Biestek recorded his second sack of the night, stripping Maetzold of the ball and recovering the fumble to end the scrimmage. Maetzold kept the drive alive with a fourth down pass over the middle to Sam Ajala, which moved the ball from the offense's 46 to the defense's 17.
The Rams will have one final scrimmage on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. before they close camp.

Practice, Practice, Practice: The Rams ended the scrimmage as they did the first, by singing the Fordham Fight Song, a practice they hope to repeat for numerous games this year as the Rams perform the song after each win.
Off Day: The Rams will be of the field on Friday before returning to action on Saturday for a double session.
