After losing a pair of assistant coaches to head coaching positions this summer, Fordham head coach Bridget Orchard announced the hiring of former Ram Chelsea Plimpton, who was a pitcher for the team from 2009-11, as Fordham's Pitching Coach.
Since earning her degree in Communications and Media Studies from Fordham in 2011, Plimpton has made a pair of coaching stops, beginning with St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, in the fall or 2011, and more recently, she was an assistant coach at Marist University in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the Red Foxes, Plimpton helped team finish with a 28-27 overall record, including a 12-4 home mark. The team advanced to the MAAC Tournament where it was eliminated by Canisius College.
Plimpton began her collegiate playing career at St. John's, but transferred to Fordham after her freshman year. In three years at Rose Hill, Plimpton compiled a 40-16 lifetime mark, and recorded the third most strikeouts (322) and shutouts (11) in school history. She highlighted her Fordham career by tossing a no-hitter against Princeton in 2010.
Plimpton was a key member of the 2010 Fordham softball team that won the Atlantic 10 regular-season title, captured the A-10 championship, and advanced to the NCAA Regional, where it defeated Penn State before being eliminated by those same Nittany Lions.
For the 2013 season, Plimpton will be taking over a pitching staff that will look to replace graduated All-American Jen Mineau. Returning to the circle for the Rams are sophomores Taylor Pirone and Michele Daubman and the will be joined by Virginia transfer Rachel Gillen.
The 2012 Fordham softball team finished the year with a 32-26 record, marking the ninth straight season with thirty wins. The Rams defeated their highest-ranked opponent ever (#3 Alabama) in the season finale, and the team advanced to the Atlantic 10 tournament for the tenth consecutive season.
