Omaha, Neb. -

Fordham University junior Brienne Ryan (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) competed in the 100m backstroke today at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the CenturyLink Center where she placed 20th overall out of 162 competitors.

Ryan's time of 1:02.49 was just 0.28 seconds shy of qualifying her for tonight's semifinals (the top 16 swimmers advanced). She was placed in a difficult heat, swimming with 2011 Pan American champion Rachel Bootsma, who was the second fastest qualifier at 59.69, and 2012 NCAA bronze medalist Jennifer Connolly, who placed second in the heat and eleventh overall in 1:01.47. Ryan took fourth in the heat, being edged out by just 0.03 seconds by Ellen Williamson, a 2012 NCAA All-American in the 200 backstroke.

The heat featuring Ryan will be broadcast tonight (Tuesday) on a tape delay basis on the NBC Sports channel at 6:30 PM (EST).

Ryan will now compete in the 200 backstroke on Saturday morning in Omaha.
