The renovated Bahoshy Field has proven to be a welcoming place for the Fordham softball team so far in 2012 as the Rams improved to 5-0 at home with 8-3 and 7-3 victories in a doubleheader with Binghamton on Tuesday. Michele Daubman and Taylor Pirone each earned wins in the circle for Fordham.
Game 1
Daubman labored a bit in the first inning and the Bearcats took advantage as they loaded the bases on a pair of fielder choices and a single. Binghamton took a 1-0 lead when Linda Verduzco was hit by the pitch to force in a run and the next batter, Jessica Bump, made it 2-0 with an RBI single to right field.
Fordham evened the score in the bottom of the second inning as Briana Turgeon led off with an infield single. She moved to second on Elise Fortier's base hit and came in to score on a Daubman double to left that moved Fortier to third. Chelsea Palumbo then evened the score at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Fortier.
The Rams would take the lead for good with a three-run third. Jamie LaBovick started the rally by ripped a ball off of the pitcher for a single. Nicole Callahan followed with her first home run of the season to give the Rams a 4-2 advantage. Turgeon then walked, moved to second on a Fortier hit, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and stole home on the back end of a double steal to put the Rams up 5-2.
Fordham added some insurance runs on a two-out rally in the fifth. Turgeon ignited the rally with an infield single and she promptly stole second. Fortier's third hit of the game drove her in to increase the Fordham lead to 6-2. Fortier scored on the next play, when Gabby Luety ripped a grounder to short that was misplayed for an error. Luety moved all the way around to third as the throw was late getting home to try and nab Fortier. Daubman followed that with her second RBI of the game, this one on a base hit to left center that scored Luety.
Daubman surrendered a run in the sixth, but ended up with the complete game victory. She improved to 2-4 on the season. Fortier was a perfect 3-for-3 at bat, and Turgeon scored three times.
Game 2
The nightcap saw fellow freshman Taylor Pirone take the start in the circle. Fordham gave her a slim lead right away when LaBovick led off the first with a single. She advanced to third when Callahan doubled into the left-center gap, and scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0.
Binghamton tied the score in the top of the third as Lisa Cutrona put the ball into left-center for a leadoff double. Caitlyn Friis drove her in with a ground rule double that bounced over the wall in right to tie the game at one.
Fordham regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. LaBovick reached on a single up the middle, Callahan drew a walk and Paige Ortiz socked her team-leading eighth home run of the season onto the tennis courts over the left field wall, giving the Rams a 4-1 advantage.
Pirone battled into the sixth inning where she began to show signs of fatigue as Jessica Phillips led off with a base hit to left. Mikala King followed with a double to right and the Bearcats had runners on second and third with no outs.
Pirone got Chelsea Horne to groundout, with Phillips scoring on the play, and two batters later, Jessica Bump connected on an RBI double that scored King and got Binghamton within one, 4-3. Jen Mineau came in to relieve Pirone and got Chelsey Locatell swinging at the third strike to end the threat.
The Rams countered in the bottom of the sixth with some crucial insurance runs. Jessica Crowley started the rally with a grounder that was misplayed at shortstop for an error. She moved to second on a groundout and went to third when she slid under the tag on Kayla Lombardo's fielder's choice. LaBovick then connected on another grounder to short that was misplayed for the second error of the inning, allowing Crowley to score and give Fordham a 5-3 lead. Callahan followed LaBovick with another single to load the bases for Ortiz, who picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a groundout that scored Lombardo and gave the Rams a 6-3 advantage. The seventh run of the game came in when Katherine VanBenschoten ripped a line drive off the pitcher that plated LaBovick.
Mineau struck out the side in the seventh to earn her first save of the year, while Pirone picked up her third victory. LaBovick and Callahan each had two hits in the victory as the Rams improved to 20-16 on the season.
Fordham travels to Philadelphia for a pair of crucial games with Atlantic 10 foes Saint Joseph's and Temple this weekend. The first game with the Hawks begins on Thursday, April 5, at 3:00 PM. All three teams are all undefeated in the A-10.
