The Mid-Major All-American Team selected by CollegeSwimming.com was released this afternoon with three Fordham swimmers among the honorees. Junior Brienne Ryan (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) was named to the women's Mid-Major All-American Team, while senior Courtney Collyer (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) and junior Devon Morris (Kirkland, Wash./The Bush School) were named Mid-Major Honorable Mention All-America. This is the second straight season that Ryan and Collyer have been acknowledged by CollegeSwimming.com, as both were Honorable Mention selections last season, while being the first time for Morris.
The All-American group earned the honor based on their qualification for the 2012 NCAA Division I Swimming Championships. Honorable mention selections are swimmers who were entered with NCAA `B' standards, but not selected for the 2012 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
A U.S. Olympic trials qualifier, Ryan earned All-Atlantic 10 honors in seven events this season, while setting three individual school records, as well as one relay record at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship. She was the Atlantic 10 Champion in the 50-yard freestyle event (23.18), as well as in the 800 freestyle relay, and also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, the 200- and 400-yard medley relay, and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Ryan had another record breaking season, setting new school marks in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle (50.62), 100 backstroke (52.88), 200 backstroke (1:54.67), and with the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.70). She capped her season at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship, competing in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, finishing 20th and 17th, respectively. She was later selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team as well.
Collyer wrapped up one of the best four-year stint's in the program's history, as she became a four-time Atlantic 10 champion in the 200 butterfly event in February, as well as capturing the A-10 champion title in the 100 butterfly and 800 freestyle relay. He also earned All-Conference honors in the 200 individual medley, the 200 and 400 medley relays, and the 400 freestyle relay.
Collyer's time of 1:59.42 in the 200 butterfly set both the Fordham and Atlantic 10 records in that event. She also set new school marks this season in the 100 butterfly (54.32), 200 individual medley (2:02.59), and 400 freestyle relay (3:23.70). She finished her career holding six school records, and has the most A-10 champion titles (8) of any Fordham swimmer in team history.
Morris had a very successful junior campaign for the men's team, becoming the Atlantic 10 Champion in the 50-yard freestyle event and setting the conference and school record at 20.28 seconds. He also earned Atlantic 10 Champion status with the 200 freestyle relay that won the event in a school record time of 1:21.68.
Morris earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors as well at this year's Atlantic 10 Championship, placing second in the 100 freestyle in a school-record time of 44.84 seconds, while grabbing sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.78 seconds. He was later selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team as well.
The following conferences have been designated as Mid-Majors: America East, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mountain Pacific, Missouri Valley, Patriot, Sun Belt, Summit, and Western Athletic. Institutions are also eligible by awarding fewer than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
