Women's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with Win over St. John's

Bronx, N.Y. - The St. John's University women's tennis team hasn't been to Rose Hill in a while and the Fordham squad didn't play good hosts today, defeating the Red Storm, 5-2, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Corts on Senior Day. Prior to the match, Fordham seniors Bethany Boyle and Sarah Tremaine were honored by head coach Bette-Ann Speliotis Liguori and their teammates made sure they were sent off in style.

The match opened with the Rams taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Julie Leong and Hanna Fritzinger got things started for the Rams with an 8-4 win over Nakita Austin and Terri Thomas at third doubles and then Bella Genkina and Sarah Ali clinched the point with a 9-7 decision over Ece Firat and Joanna Zwirbulis at the second position.

The Rams then won the match by taking four of the six singles matches. Amy Simidian, Genkina and Fritzinger all won in straight sets. Simidian bested Nevena Selakovic 6-3, 6-4, at first singles, Genkina took care of Austin, 6-1, 6-4, at fourth singles, and Fritzinger was victorious over Thomas, 6-4, 7-5, at the sixth position.

Ali won the other singles match for Fordham, dropping the first set to Diamond Adams at second singles, 5-7, but coming back to win the second, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 11-9.

With the win, the Rams close out the regular season with a 17-5 mark, They will next be in action on Friday, April 20th, as they open play at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
