Women's Tennis Shuts Out Marist, 7-0

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - With the return of its number one singles player, the Fordham University women's tennis squad picked up its 16th win of the season, blanking Marist College, 7-0, at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday.

Fordham opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. Bella Genkina and Sarah Ali defeated Kayla O'Donovan and Sabrina Tahir at second doubles, 8-2, while Hanna Fritzinger and Julie Leong were victorious at third doubles over Joana Sun and Tessa Lewis by the same score.

The Rams then swept all six singles matches, four in straight sets. Angelika Dabu took third singles from Sun, 6-1, 6-2, while Genkina took care of Tahir at the fourth position, 6-3, 6-2. Julie Leong picked up the win at fifth singles for Fordham, besting O'Donovan, 6-1, 6-1, and Fritzinger won at the sixth spot over Lewis, 6-1, 6-0.

At second singles, Ali took the first set from Erin McCarthy, 6-3, but dropped the second by the same score to force a tiebreaker. Ali won the tiebreaker, 10-6.

At first singles, Amy Simidian, who returned to action after missing two matches, was up 3-0 in the first set on Kelsey Raynor before Raynor retired.

With the win, Fordham's fourth in its last five matches, the Rams improve to 16-5 on the year. They will next be in action on Sunday, April 15th, as they host Saint John's University on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 1:00 PM on Senior Day.
