A superstitious person might think something magical is in the new clay at Bahoshy Field as the first two games played at the refurbished facility resulted in no-hitters. But anyone in attendance on Friday will contest it has more to do with the magic in Jen Mineau's arm as she threw her ninth career no-hitter to pace the Rams to 8-0 and 8-2 wins over Charlotte. With the wins, Fordham remains undefeated in Atlantic 10 play at 6-0 and goes to 18-16 overall.
Game 1:
Mineau had it going immediately as she struck out the side in the first, allowing a lone base runner via a hit by pitch. Mineau got help in the bottom of the frame as the Rams scored three times.
Jamie LaBovick opened the frame with a walk and moved to third on a ground-rule double to right by Nicole Callahan. They both came in to score when Paige Ortiz hit the ball back to the box and 49ers' starter Lexi Betancourt fielded the ball and threw it over the first baseman's head for an error. Brianna Turgeon promptly gave Fordham a 3-0 lead with a two-bagger to left center that plated Ortiz.
Mineau was untouched in the second as she allowed only a walk to Samantha Slade.
The 49ers had just one more base runner for the entire game and saw no runners advance to second base in the game.
Fordham made the score 6-0 by scoring three more in the second. Chelsea Palumbo laced a line drive to center to open the inning and moved to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Lindsey Kay Bright scored her with an RBI single to left and Bright later scored when Callahan singled and moved to second on an error that allowed Bright to go home. Brianna Ciuffi came in to run for Callahan and Ciuffi touched the plate on a Turgeon single that made the score 6-0.
The Rams scored the all important eighth run in the third as Gabby Luety led off with a single and Michele Daubman blasted a two-run home run, her second of the year, to make the score 8-0. Jen Mineau did the rest, recording the five-inning, no-hitter.
Mineau finished the game with one walk and ten strikeouts. The complete game was her 18th of the season and she improved to 14-8 with the win. This was her second straight no-hitter at home after she blanked St. John's on March 20. It was also her second career no-hitter against Charlotte.
Turgeon, Callahan and Daubman each had two hits to lead the Rams in game one.
Game 2
The Rams used the exact same lineup in game two and this time it took until the third inning for Fordham to reap the results.
Bright led off the Fordham third with a single and LaBovick followed with her own base hit to put runners on the corners. Callahan gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Bright and Ortiz followed with an RBI single down the left field line to plate LaBovick with the second run. Sammi Smith came in to run for Ortiz and Smith made it 3-0 when Turgeon `s grounder was misplayed and then thrown away.
Fordham took a 4-0 lead an inning later when LaBovick ripped an RBI double that scored Palumbo who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
Charlotte scored a run in the fifth to make it 4-1, but the Rams quickly responded with a three-run blast from Luety to the opposite field, and Fordham led 7-1 after five. It was Luety's team-leading seventh home run of the season.
The 49ers scored again in the sixth on a solo shot from Briana Gwaltney to pull within 7-2, however, that run was negated in the bottom of the inning on a home run from LaBovick, her fourth of the year.
Mineau threw her 19th complete game in the win, scattering just three hits and giving up one earned run while walking one and striking out 12. Mineau improved to 15-8 with the victory.
At the plate, LaBovick went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday, April 3, when they welcome the Binghamton Bearcats to Bahoshy Field for a doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
