After seeing time in the ITA rankings over the past few weeks, the Fordham women's tennis team was back in local action this afternoon at Fairleigh Dickinson's Tennis Center for a match-up with the Knights in Teaneck, New Jersey. Playing without top player Amy Simidian, the Rams won three singles matches, but came up short in doubles play, falling to Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3.
The loss puts Fordham's overall record at 12-4 on the season, while Fairleigh Dickinson improved to 9-5.
The match began with the two sides splitting the first two doubles matches. Ann Rapoport and Irina Dementyeva topped Fordham's duo of Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina at first doubles, 8-3, while Fordham's pair of Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong defeated Elmine Botes and Manuela Lane, 8-3, at third doubles.
The deciding doubles match went FDU's way, as Egzona Morina and Julia Prantl edged Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger and Sarah Tremaine, 8-6, at second doubles.
In singles action, Fairleigh Dickinson earned victories in the first three singles matches to win the overall match, but Fordham did capture three singles victories, all in third set super tie-breakers.
Lane posted the Knights' first singles win at the #6 slot over Tremaine, 6-2, 6-2, while Rapoport recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ali at first singles. Botes clinched the overall match win for Fairleigh Dickinson with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Genkina at second singles.
The Rams then reeled off three singles wins by Fritzinger, Leong, and Dabu. Fritzinger dropped the opening set to Morina, 3-6, at fifth singles, but rebounded with a 6-2 second set and a super tie-breaker win of 11-9 to win the match.
The same thing happened at fourth singles to Leong, where she bounced back to win the second set, 6-2, over Dementyeva, and then took the super tie-breaker, 10-7. Dabu completed the singles' wins, as she held on for a 6-3, 2-6, 10-6, victory at third singles over Prantl.
The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, March 24th, when the Rams host Atlantic 10 opponent, Saint Joseph's University at 10:00 AM.
