Bronx, N.Y. - After over a month on the road, the Fordham University softball squad will return to the Bronx and formally open the newly renovated Bahoshy Softball Field on Tuesday, March 20th, as they host St. John's University at 3:00 PM. To celebrate the opening, free hot dogs and popcorn will be offered while supplies last!
Bahoshy Field underwent a major renovation during the offseason which included new dugouts, a new grandstand with a press box and the replacement of the infield playing surface.
Former Ram Lisa Barczak Smith, FCRH '89, will be on hand to officially open the facility by throwing out the first pitch on Tuesday. Barczak Smith played right field, pitcher and second base for the Rams. The mother of three girls and one boy, she remains close to the game she grew up playing by coaching the three different softball teams that her daughters play on.
The Rams enter the game in the midst of a four-game winning streak after posting a 4-1 mark at the JMU Days Inn Invitational this past weekend in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Freshman Michele Daubman earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the tournament and was subsequently named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on March 19. Over the week, she raised her batting average to a team-best .317 on the season. Fellow freshman Paige Ortizenters the game as the team leader in home runs (four) and slugging percentage (470).
In the circle, the Rams return All-American Jen Mineaufor her senior season. Mineau ended last season with a 24-9 mark. She is currently 9-8 on the year with a 2.16 ERA while tossing 13 complete games and striking out 150 batters in 113.2 innings pitched.
The Red Storm is playing its first game in nine days and enters the matchup with Fordham in the midst of a four-game winning streak that includes victories over UNC-Wilmington, Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Bowling Green. On offense, the team is led by Kristi Cady, who is hitting .388 with three home runs, 12 RBI and 15 runs scored. Kacee Cox is the team leader in home runs (five) and is batting .295.
In the circle, St. John's leans on the right arm of Ashley Beza. She enters the game with a 4-8 record, nine complete games, two shutouts and a 2.40 ERA. Beza was named to the Big East Honor Roll on March 12 due to her three-win, 21-strikeout performance in the week prior.
