Orlando, Fla. -
The Fordham University women's tennis squad ventured down to Orlando for spring break and picked up a win in their first match of the trip, defeating Seton Hall University, 4-3, on Wednesday.
The Rams opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. Bella Genkina and Sarah Ali teamed up at second doubles to win over Seton Hall's Madison Shoemaker and Elizabeth Verow, 8-1, while Hanna Fritzinger and Julie Leong were victorious by the same score over Karina Cordero and Courtney Kilarski at the third position.
At first doubles, Angelika Dabu and Amy Simidian almost made it a clean sweep for Fordham but they lost in a tiebreaker to Rocio Portela and Chloe Sher, 8-7 (5).
Fordham then picked up the victory by taking three singles matches. Dabu and Fritzinger were victorious in straight sets at second and fourth singles, respectively. Dabu defeated Portela, 6-2, 6-2, while Fritzinger upended Cordero, 6-3, 6-1.
The other Fordham singles point came from Genkina at the third spot but it wasn't easy as each of the first two sets went to tiebreaker. She took the first set from Verow, 7-6 (winning the tiebreaker 7-4) and then dropped the second by the exact same score to force a tiebreaker for the match. Genkina took the tiebreaker, 10-7, to give the Rams the win.
Simidian almost picked up another point for the Rams at first singles, winning the first set from Sher, 6-4, but losing the second, 6-2 and the tiebreaker, 10-6, as did Leong at No. 6, who dropped the first set to Rodriguez, 6-1, before winning the second, 7-5, but then coming up just short in the tiebreaker, 11-9.
The Rams will continue play in Orlando as they take on Long Island University on Saturday, March 17th, at 10:30 a.m.
