Fordham University sophomore Kuba Kowalski (Krakow, Poland/Piarist Gimnazyum and freshman Bella Genkina (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) were named Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Performer of the Week and Women's Rookie of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the conference office today. It is the second weekly award of the year for each as Kowalski was named Performer of the Week on February 13th and Genkina the Rookie of the Week on February 20th.
In a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's on Tuesday, Kowalski picked up a convincing straight-set victory over Saint Peter's Alex Frakes, winning 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. He also partnered with fellow Ram Mischa Koran to down Saint Peter's top doubles tandem, 8-4.
In the other match on the week, a 7-0 loss to 68th-ranked St. John's, Kowalski fell to the number one player for the Red Storm, 7-5, 6-2.
Genkina picked up two singles victories on the week, both at the No. 5 position, as well as two doubles victories. In the first match, a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's on Wednesday, Genkina defeated Jemila Brady, 3-6, 6-2, 10-3, and then teamed with Sarah Ali to take second doubles from Adina Ungurean-Hala and Brady, 8-1.
In the other match on the week, a 5-2 loss to George Washington on Saturday, Genkina again won at the fifth singles position via tiebreaker, defeating Isabella Escobar, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. In doubles play, Genkina and Ali took care of Leah Pascarella and Escobar, 8-6.
The Fordham men's tennis team, 11-3 on the year, will return to action on Saturday, March 17th, as they host La Salle University on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 11:00 a.m.
The Fordham women's tennis team, currently 9-3, will next be in action on Wednesday, March 14th, as the Rams face Seton Hall University in Orlando, Florida, at 12:00 p.m.
