In a highly contested match, the Fordham women's tennis team fell to the George Washington Colonials by a 5-2 score at Stadium Tennis in the Bronx.
The tight match began in doubles, as the two teams split the first two matches. Fordham's Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina won at second doubles over Isabella Escobar and Leah Pascarella, 8-6, while Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner edged Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger and Julie Leong by the same score.
The doubles point came down to the first doubles matches, where Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn needed an extra game to get past Fordham's Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabu, 9-7.
In singles play, Fordham evened the match at one, when Leong picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at sixth singles at Tyner.
George Washington came back to take the next three matches with extremely tight scores. Pascarella defeated Ali, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), at second singles, with Hamling taking down Dabu, 6-3, 6-4, at third singles. Julie Blakeley also won for the Colonials over Fritzinger at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Genkina got a point back for the Rams at fifth ingles, as she defeated Escobar, 6-4, 5-7, and 10-8, but the Colonials finished off the 5-2 win with Corba topping Simidian at first singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 14th, when the team takes on Seton Hall in Orlando, Florida.
