2012 Fordham Athletic Hall of Fame Brochure

The ranks of Fordham University Athletic Hall of Famers will grow by eight on Saturday, February 25th, as the Rams induct the newest class at the annual Hall of Fame Awards Brunch at 10:30 a.m. in Fordham's McGinley Center located on the school's Bronx campus. The day will be made even more special by an appearance of the New York Giants 2012 Lombardi Trophy at the ceremony.
Joining the likes of such Fordham notables as Frankie Frisch, Vince Lombardi, Vin Scully, Wellington Mara and Peter Harnisch will be Bob Cole, GSB '78 (Baseball), Bob Cooney, FCRH `29 (Baseball), Kate Davis Barrick, FCRH `06 (Softball), Erika Newell, FCRH '05 (Swimming), Maik Wiedenbach, FCRH '01 (Swimming), Dan Wolleben, FCRH '04 (Rowing), Deric Zaphire, FCRH '03 (Track & Field) and Maureen Zivic, GSB '05 (Track & Field).
At the 2012 Hall of Fame ceremony, the New York Giants 2012 Lombardi Trophy will be on display and will be available for photo opportunities. Following the brunch, the trophy will be brought down to the Rose Hill Gym for the Fordham-La Salle men's game where it will also be available for photo opportunities with the fans.
Here is a brief synopsis for the newest Hall of Famers:
Cole was a four-year pitcher for the Rams who left his mark on the Fordham record book. After walking on to the team as a freshman, Cole went on to have a successful career as a relief pitcher, graduating with school records for most appearances (19) and saves (7) in a season as well as career marks for both categories (43 appearances and 13 saves).
Cooney was a mainstay with the Fordham baseball nine in the 1920's. Despite playing over 80 years ago, he is still listed among the Fordham all-time pitching leaders, currently ranking tied for first all-time with six complete game shutouts (tied with Ed Estwanick), third in career complete games (15) and 15th in wins (17). His Fordham four-year career record was 64-18.
Davis Barrick was the driving force behind the ascension of Fordham softball to national prominence, helping the Rams to their first ever regular season Atlantic 10 title in 2005. Davis Barrick patrolled the Fordham outfield for three seasons, starting 169 of the 170 games she appeared in. She was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection from 2004-06 (First Team in 2006, 2004 and 2005 when there was only one All-Conference team) and won Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors in 2005, becoming the first Fordham female athlete to earn A-10 Player of the Year honors.
Newell rewrote the women's record book in each of her three years at Rose Hill. Her top season was her senior year where she became Fordham's first-ever multi-event winner at the Atlantic 10 championships, winning the 100 and 200 backstroke, setting an Atlantic 10 record in the 100 backstroke. She set four individual school records and two relay records as a senior. Newell capped her senior year by being named recipient of the 2005 Hobbes Family Award as the school's outstanding female athlete.
Wiedenbach was one of the top male swimmers at Fordham in the late 1990's and early 2000's. He top year was his sophomore season in 1999-2000 when he broke three Fordham records, individually in the 50 and 100 freestyle and as a member of the 800 freestyle relay. He broke the 50 and 100 freestyle records at the 2000 Atlantic 10 championships, finishing second in both events to garner Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and went on to place second in both races at the 2000 ECAC Championships. The 100 freestyle record that he broke was one of the oldest at Fordham, having been set 24 years earlier.
Wolleben was a mainstay with the men's rowing program, winning a national championship all four years at Rose Hill. A four-year member of the men's varsity crew, Wolleben was a four-time Varsity National Championship Gold Medalist, winning the Dad Vail championship three times and the ECAC National Championship once, while stroking two of those championship winning crews to victory. He is a member of a very unique list of rowers in the history of collegiate rowing to win a major national college championship all four years on the varsity level.
Zaphire was a school record setter and All-Atlantic 10 performer over his Fordham career. He set the school record in the indoor 500m (the mark was broken this winter) and has the second fastest 400m hurdles time in school history, behind Fordham Hall of Famer Tim Marshall. In 2002, Zaphire was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10 with a second place showing in the indoor 500m and went on to earn All-East honors in the event. Outdoors as a junior, Zaphire earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 and All-East accolades in the 400m hurdles.
Zivic was the top women's runners at the school from 2003-06, winning two Atlantic 10 championships. She set school records in the indoor 400m (56.84) and 500m (1:14.63) as well as being a member of school record indoor 4x400 relay and the 4x200 relay that set a school record at the 2003 Penn Relays. A 2005 Atlantic 10 indoor champion in the 500m as a junior, Zivic was also a member of the outdoor 4x800 relay team in 2005 that won its race at the Penn Relays and took second at the A-10 Championships to earn Second Team All-League honors. She earned her second Atlantic 10 title with a win in the 800m at the 2006 outdoor championship as a senior.
The 2012 Hall of Fame ceremony will begin with a special mass at the University Church at 9:30 a.m. The Hall of Famers and their guest will then proceed to the McGinley Center Ballroom for the formal induction ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m. New York Yankees announcer, and Fordham alum, Michael Kay will serve as the Master of Ceremony at the brunch.
Following the ceremony, the Hall of Famers will attend the Fordham-La Salle men's basketball game in the Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 p.m. with the new class being introduced to the crowd at halftime.
