Fordham University freshman Bella Genkina (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) and Peder Gram (Portland, Oregon/Jesuit) were named Atlantic 10 Women's and Men's Tennis Rookies of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the conference office today. It is the first weekly award for each and the third weekly award for the Rams as Kuba Kowalski was named Performer of the Week last week.
In two matches on the week, a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure and a 7-0 victory over Vassar with both matches being played Sunday at West Point, Genkina picked up two singles victories, one at the No. 4 position and the other at the number No, 3 spot, for the Rams, both in straight sets. In her first match on Sunday, Genkina upended St. Bonaventure's Amanda Pallikunnel, 6-0 and 6-3, at fourth singles and later in the day she defeated Joy Backer of Vassar, 6-3 and 6-2, at third singles.
In doubles action, Genkina also finished the day undefeated, teaming with Sarah Ali at second doubles, defeating St. Bonaventure's Fatya Amiri and Manuela Marin-Salcedo, 8-5, and Vassar's Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro, 8-3.
Gram had just one match on the week for the Fordham men, a 6-1 win at St. Bonaventure on Friday. In that match, Gram defeated Trevor Haskell in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2, at the sixth singles position.
In doubles play, Gram teamed with Max Peara to defeat St. Bonaventure's Miguel Suarez and Trevor Haskell by an 8-4 score.
The Fordham men's tennis team, 8-2 on the year, will return to action on Saturday, February 25, as they travel to East Hartford, Conn., to face the University of Hartford Hawks at 3:00 p.m.
The Fordham women's tennis team, currently 8-2, will next be in action on Wednesday, March 7th, as the Rams travel to Jersey City, N.J., to face Saint Peter's College at 3:00 p.m.
