Fordham University sophomore Kuba Kowalski (Krakow, Poland/Piarist Gimnazyum) was named Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Performer of the Week it was announced by the conference office today. It is the first weekly award for Kowalski and the first weekly award earned by a Fordham men's tennis player since Phil Bednarczyk was named Rookie of the Week in 2004 and the first Performer of the Week for the Rams since Chris Kelly in 2003.
In two matches on the week, Kowalski picked up a pair of singles victories at the No. 1 position for the Rams, including one over a top-100 player. That win was a hard-fought three-set victory over #98 Venkat Iver of Cornell on Sunday. Kowalski dropped the first set to Iver, 6-2, but squeaked out a win in the second, 7-5, forcing a third set which he won, 6-3.
In the other match, Kowalski defeated New Jersey Tech's Holger Norregaard at first singles on Thursday. Once again he dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to win the second and third, 6-4 and 6-1, respectively.
In doubles play, Kowalski teamed with Mischa Koran to defeat NJIT's top doubles team of Petr Rousar/Victor Martinez by an 8-5 score and fell to Cornell's Venkat Iver and Alex Sidney, ranked 35th in te nation, 8-5.
The Fordham men's tennis team, 7-2 on the year, will return to action on Friday, February 17, as they travel to St. Bonaventure, N.Y., to face the Bonnies at 4:00 p.m.
