Women's Tennis Falls to Defending A-10 Champion Richmond, 5-2

Feb. 10, 2012

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham women's tennis team put their unblemished record on the line Friday, taking on the defending Atlantic 10 Champion, Richmond, in Philadelphia at Penn's Levy Pavilion. The Rams put up a good effort, but eventually fell to the Spiders by a 5-2 score.

Richmond opened the match by taking the doubles point. Richmond's Joanna Matuszczyk and Melissa Kandinata topped Fordham's Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina at second doubles, 8-0, while Nil Horoz and Elizabeth Sims defeated Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger and Julie Leong, 8-4.

Fordham just missed winning at first doubles as Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabu lost in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7-2) , to Richmond's Helen Cunningham and Alexandra Smyth.

Simidian found some revenge for that loss in singles play, as she defeated Cunningham at first singles in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

The Rams earned a second point at sixth single, where Leong topped Horoz, 6-0 and 6-4.

The two points were all Fordham could muster as the Spiders earned straight set victories at second through fifth singles to win the match, 5-2.

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Sunday, February 12th, when the Rams travel to Army for a 1:00 PM match.
