Frank Schnur Retrospective Photo Gallery
Bronx, N.Y. - On Thursday, February 7th, former Fordham men's soccer coach Frank Schnur will be one of five honorees in the inaugural New York City Soccer Gala event, held at the New York Athletic Club. Schnur will be joined by Coach Dieter Ficken (Columbia), Coach Arnold Ramirez (LIU), Coach Carlo Tramontozzi (St. Francis), and Sunil Gulati, the President of the U.S. Soccer Federation.
The New York City Soccer Gala was formulated by the Division I men's soccer programs of New York City. Soccer in New York City has a rich history and the Gala's goal is to highlight and show appreciation to all those who have devoted their lives to enhancing the game of soccer.
The Gala will honor outstanding people from youth, amateur, collegiate and professional soccer, and award both the NYC Met Male and Female Soccer Players of the Year. It will also serve as a platform for all levels of the game to come together and celebrate. Along with honorees from the above, the Gala will have an annual Humanitarian Award recipient, which will go to Jerome Belson (St. John's) this year.
"Frank Schnur is not only a major part of Fordham University Men's Soccer, but was extremely important to the development of soccer in the New York area," said current Fordham Soccer coach Jim McElderry. "It is only fitting Frank be honored as a key component to the New York City soccer scene. He has been honored with Coach of the Year awards at Fordham, but I am extremely excited for him and his family that he will now also be recognized by the entire New York City soccer community. It will be a great evening and hope to see all of his former players at the event."
Fordham men's soccer and Frank Schnur were brought together in 1969 after the University brought the team back as a varsity sport.
Coach Schnur would hold the head coaching job of the men's soccer program at Fordham for next 34 seasons, posting a career record of 260-307-47.
Schnur's career highlights are numerous, and include five Tri-State Conference titles, three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles, the inaugural Patriot League title in 1990, the Atlantic 10 Conference title in 1996 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first and only time in the program's history. Among his individual honors, he is a three-time Fordham "Iron Major" Coach of the Year (1996, 1986, 1980), three-time MAAC Coach of the Year (1986, 1985, 1981), Metropolitan Coach of the Year (1979), Patriot League Coach of the Year (1990), and Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (1998).
Schnur, who earned all but 28 wins in the program's history through the 2002 season, was ranked among the nation's leaders in career wins.
Over his final seven years, the Rams twice tallied 12 wins, the second-best total in school history. Fordham recorded a 12-7-1 record in 1998, and had a 12-10-1 record in 1996 when the squad won the Atlantic 10 title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Schnur led the Rams to 15 winning seasons, with a best-ever mark of 13-4-3 in 1985. After joining the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Rams posted three winning seasons under Schnur, as he led the Rams to their first back-to-back winning seasons (1995 and 1996) since Fordham went on a nine-year winning season streak from 1979 to 1987.
The Austria native holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Adelphi University, a Master's degree from New York University, and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Schnur was the head coach of the Long Island select program for ten seasons and was a pioneer of soccer on Long Island, where his indoor and outdoor camps have produced eleven national youth team players. He has sent five Rams to play professionally in the United States and numerous others overseas. His involvement and success with the state and regional youth teams and national teams, as well as his achievements on the intercollegiate level have made him a well-respected coach both at home and abroad.
