Newport News, Va. - Fordham freshman swimmer Steve Sholdra (Renton, Wash./H.B. Education) was selected as the Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming & Diving Co-Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season, it was announced by the league today.
Sholdra continued his impressive freshman season this past Satruday, winning three events in the Rams' tri-meet with Boston College and Williams College. He took first place in the 500 freestyle (4:37.26), 1,000 freestyle (9:28.74) and 200 butterfly (1:52.90) events, in addition to swimming on the third place 400 freestyle relay team.
Sholdra remains the top time in the Atlantic 10 Conference in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle, the 200 butterfly, and the 400 individual medley this season. He has also set the school record in the 500 freestyle event. His five rookie awards tie Ryan Coombs' 2006-07 season for the second-most by a Ram and is one shy of the Atlantic 10 record of six, held by Fordham's Donnie Callara during the 2004-05 season.
Sholdra and the rest of the Fordham swimming & diving team are off from competition until January 18th, when the Rams host Iona College at the Messmore Aquatic Center, beginning at 4:00 PM.
