Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham softball head coach Bridget Orchard announced the team's 2013 schedule today, as the Rams look for their third trip to the NCAA Championship in the last four seasons. This year's schedule is once again a challenging one, as Fordham will face 13 teams that played in the 2012 NCAA Championship.
On top of competing for a trip to the NCAA Championship, the Rams will be competing for their 11th consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship tournament berth, and capture that their second Atlantic 10 title in three years. The 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship is slated for May 8th-11th at the UMass Softball Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Fordham will compete in five tournaments once again this season, which includes four tournaments in Florida and one in Virginia.
Fordham opens its season at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Invitational, February 8th-10th, hosted at the National Training Center Softball Complex in Clermont, Florida. Fordham is scheduled to play NCAA tournament participants Viriginia Tech and LIU, as well as two games against Tennessee-Chattanooga and one versus Southern Illinois.
The Rams make their second trip to Florida two weeks later to participate in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. Fordham will meet NCAA Tournament teams DePaul and Central Florida, and follow with contests against Indiana, Pacific and UC Davis.
Fordham's schedule doesn't lighten up the following weekend, March 1st-3rd, as the team goes back to Florida and the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando for the Citrus Classic. Four of the Rams' five opponents at the tournament made the NCAA Championship last year, starting with Georgia Tech and Maryland on day one, Mississippi State on day two, and wrapping up the Classic with Texas on day three. The Rams' remaining game will be against Pittsburgh.
The Rams' final regular season visit to Florida begins March 8th-10th, as Fordham makes its annual visit to one of USF's early season tournaments. Opponents for Fordham in that tournament will be Central Michigan, Tennessee Tech, Western Michigan, Youngstown State, and Maine. Fordham will have one final game in Florida, as they match-up against NCAA Tournament team, Boston University, in a single game on March 12th in Clearwater, Florida.
The Rams then have their final in-season tournament on March 15th-17th at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Rams will play Detroit, Binghamton, and James Madison over the three-day stretch.
Fordham remains on the road for three more games before its home opener, which is a doubleheader against La Salle on March 28th. The Rams will play at Charlotte on March 22nd and 23rd to begin Atlantic 10 play, while facing NCAA team, Iona, in New Rochelle on March 27th.
Along with the La Salle doubleheader, Fordham will host eight other teams at Bahoshy Field this season. In league play, George Washington (March 30 - DH), Rhode Island (April 7 - DH), Dayton (April 19-20), and Saint Joseph's (May 3-4) will come to the Bronx, while in non-conference play, NCAA participants Lehigh (April 10 - DH), Iona (April 23), and Hofstra (April 24) are Rose Hill bound, as is Siena (April 17 - DH).
The remaining road schedule for Fordham starts April 5th-6th at defending Atlantic 10 champion, the University of Massachusetts. The Rams will also travel to Saint Louis (April 12-13), Butler (April 14 - DH), St. Bonaventure (April 26-27), St. John's (April 30), and Temple (May 5 - DH).
The Rams were 32-26 last season, making its way to the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament for the 10th straight season. Fordham returns seven starters from a year ago, which includes three players, senior Jamie LaBovick, junior Elise Fortier, and sophomore Paige Ortiz, who were all named First Team All-Atlantic 10 last season.
