Women's Tennis Competes at 2012 USTA Women's College Invitational

Queens, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis team competed this weekend at the 2012 USTA Women's College Invitational where Sarah Ali advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated.

In D singles action, Sarah Ali defeated Fairfield's Sharrissa Ryan in the round of 16, rebounding after losing the first set 6-1, to take the second set, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-6. She then upended second-seeded Dena Tanenbaum from Cornell in the quarterfinals, again dropping the first set, 7-5, before coming back to win the second set, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-8. Genkina's luck came to an end in the semifinals as she was upended by Boston College's Katja Vasilyev, 7-5, 6-2.

In A singles action, Amy Simidian fell to Fairfield's Monica Yajima in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-2, and then was eliminated from the back draw with a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-8 loss to Heini Salonea of Boston College.

Bella Genkina competed in the B singles for Fordham, opening play with a 6-0, 6-2, loss to Dartmouth's Janet Liu and then falling to Marisela Aviles from Providence College in the back draw, 6-3, 6-4.

Angelika Dabu competed in the E singles for the Rams, defeating Lucy Jasso of St. Francis in the round of 16, 6-0, 6-4, before falling to Rutgers' Mariam Zein in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-3.

In F singles play, Fordham's Julie Leong advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Noor Judeh from Rutgers, 6-4, 6-3, but then fell to NJIT's Monika Graff in the quarterfinals, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger competed in G singles, falling to Lindsay Kayati of Rutgers in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-2, and then dropping her back draw match to Taylor Zaytoun of N.C. State when she withdrew due to injury.

In H singles, Anika Novacek defeated Army's Margaret Iliev in the round of 16, 6-1, 7-5, and then was upended by Gvantsa Robakidze from St. John's in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, Novacek and Simidian defeated Fairfield's Carolina Koladzyn and Monica Yajima, 8-3, in the round of 16 of first doubles while Dabu and Leong were victorious over Cornell's Courtney Malinchak and Lauren Michaels, 8-3, in fourth doubles and Ali and Genkina won their fourth doubles match by default.
